Almost Me

Almost Me
Description: The channel was built 99 yeas ago and I have visited this spot many times the last 9 years. But it was when I was standing in the middle of the bridge to photograph a HDRI panorama when I was disturbed by a car crossing the bridge. It came from the other side and had a lady driver and another SUV vehicle. And I'm not Michael 4 from DAZ, I firmly believe I'm real. Therefore the title.

This is an experiment. I re-created the bridge to cover what's on the panorama to get the shadows. The HDRI is as backdrop unusable, because Bryce shows it over saturated. Hence I rendered a 6400 pixel diameter probe six times and re-created an HDRI (from the HDRI - reverse engineered it, so to speak) and submitted it to 3 different tone-mapping operators and multiplied and added those 3 tone-mapped HDRIs. I also renddered a mask from the objects and combined the backdrop with the render. Only quality 16 was used and rendered with soft shadows with 16 rpp. The wood almost completely covers the noise. I'm awestruck! The bridge seems to be a part of the HDRI. Lighting is superb, modeling is excellent, texturing is phenomenal! The poser figures seem a little out of place, but that's just my opinion. Amazing none the less. A definite fiver!

Horo that's absolutely amazing!! Heavens, you can even see the driver in the car and personally I don't think the poser figure looks out of place at all.

Yes, having the HDRI this big provides you with great looking backdrop, not the usual pixelation-blurred probe, and very real lighting! Anurin is right - the bridge and the hdr image do blend seamlessly in the picture. There's something strange though, as if the shadows are not matching those of the probe. Seeing the slight blurring on the sides of the image I'd say the shadow matter is probably because of the perspective bending. I'm not sure that they have to soften so rapidly, at least not at this time of the day you're showing.

I personally see nothing wrong with "You" being on the bridge (or in the car), not "out of place" to me. There's something else, the Rover seems smaller (or lower) then expected. I'm comparing the height of the human figure in relation to the bridge's railing and the car. Also, because of the wider angle of view (and slight rotation upwards) the bridge seems raised a bit and the two perspectives Bryces' & HDRI's don't match entirely. I think you should move the camera back, roll it down and zoom until the angles match and you see the back part of the Rover.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Hey richter - you're right, there are several issues, but pointing the camera up is not one of them. The camera angle was set to 135 deg at 100 percent which gives an angle of view of 108 deg horizontal. This is near the lens I've used for the HDRI, which has an angle of view of 126 deg. But I don't know how the stitcher altered that for the pano. The sides are distorted like a rectified fotograph from a fisheye lens. But the pano is mapped on a sphere and there should be no distortions.

The strange size ratio of the person standing and the car is probably due to the wide angle view. The width of the bridge and height of the railing are like the original and I know how much room I had when the car passed - and I know the height of the car because I own an older model of this one. I'm about 30 cm higher than the average male so that may explain it. Nevertheless, next time I'll have to use a narrower angle to size objects and subjects and then go to a wider angle.

As I said, this was an experiment and even though it is flawed, I'm rather pleased with the outcome. But there are still a couple of loose ends if I ever attempt something like that again.

Clever! 5+

Okay, so I will get the obvious out of the way first. The image has a wonderful outdoor feeling to it. The sky is very nice and inviting and the vcegetation is very calming. This peacufl backdrop opposes somewhat the chaos of the vehicle and you. The bridge is outstanding, at least in the way it functions. The material applied to the bridge could surely have been more specific if a photo was used, but knowing you accomplished this with a procedural, I am astounded.

The lighting on the models looks good, I particularly like the way your shoulder burns out, just as we would expect from a real photo. You seem to have made good sense of carrying the High dynamic range of the backdrop into the foreground, that is why this integration functions so well.

Bryce IBL is amazing, but it does lack a few practical control parameters. If indeed this tool was modified, such extensive workarounds would likely not be necessary. But then, I would not then be able to marvel at your cleverness.

I think you have brought to light an issue we have all faced, how to produce backdrops that look good while also having light output that looks good. Your solution is very good, iImight consider something similar for my skylight hdri, it does not work well as a backdrop due to the bias issue that I corrected by adding bright edges. It makes very nice skies when used as backdrop from most but not all angles.

Scaling is a potential problem. It may indeed be that the camera angle is producing a false scaling issue. I feel certain that your own height compared to the guy seating in the vehicle indicates a scaling issue. I feel certain the bridge is too narrow and therefore the vehicle is too small. The larger the vehicle the more danger you appear to be in. Such vehicles are elevated more than standard cars. So, just how tall are you?

Those tennis shoes are sweet!!
