Millennium Cat in Carrara 6 pro
Description: Tricky challange this one. I've learned how to get DAZ models into Carrara and also to apply hair to the models and also to get it into the places I want it and not in others... (like growing over the eyes). I went for the Devon Rex breed - since they have short hair and spent a long time fiddling around with various settings. I recognise now that what I need is different thickenssess of fur (and perhaps colour) for different area's of the body - that's something I'm going to have to figure out. The eyes were a nightmare to get anything like I wanted them. The pose was supplied with the model, but it took quite a while repositioning the camera and the lights to get the mood I was looking for. So... a mixed bag, pleased with the hair effect, but want to do more. Render time about 30 mins. Doing a tennis ball was a good idea, I've still to try that... probably would have been easier... maybe.

Looks fine, it just needs longer strands. It looks a bit too short so it appears fuzzy instrad of furry. I have yet to post any of my Carrara experiments so don't take my criticsm too seriously. Also, I think the cat looks a bit like a toy perhaps from reflection values?

The tennisball was my idea, as the bryce version is very good I figured that Carrara could smash it to bits with ease. P.s. nice job making it into the Carrar galleries. Less than a month with the program and already making headlines. Nice!

I'm definitely not yet up to give advice or critique. And the race of the cat is unknown to me. So the only thing I say is that the front feet look somewhat funny and the light gives the impression of specularity on the fur.

I think that shading, width of hair, and eyes are the things that make it look not real the most. Hair should be not so wide and black instead of gray, and a bit more shine. Eyes look like buttons, maybe more shine and make the geometry a bit smaller. One more thing is if you do make the hair longer make sure to press drape, or simulate to have the hair pull down as if by gravity, this should give a nice fur, instead of a carpet type of thing :)

Yes. What I have reolised is that I'm going to have to emaciate the cat before applying fur since the Millennium cat model is at the point of - cat with fur - and I need cat without. Having dipped my own cat in the sink a few times, I have a good idea how cats without fur should look, so I shall aim for that in my model and then try to sort out the furring up. Cheers, for the hints and feedback!

thats a good point, the geometry of the cat is made to simulate fur, I ran into the same problem back when I tried to make a wolf from one of DAZ's using hair instead. I dropped that project it was too difficult, at the time it didn't have displacement painting.

oh, rashadcarter - blender got displacement painting too.

You guys really have to rub it in, don't you. This is like showing off a great new toy to the poor kid on the block. Oh what's the use. I'm just going to sit over here in a dark corner and sulk for a while.

Life. Don't talk to me about life.

There is something about the expression that gives the impression of realism. The others pointed out some of the weak spots, but I like the positioning and expression. Are the whiskers C6 hair? They turned out well.

Thanks. Na, the whiskers were part of the original model. I will try to return to this challange at a later date and do something a bit cleverer with the fur. I'm pleased you like the expression, although I didn't make the cat model, I spent a long time repositioning the camera to bring out it's character.

Almost like this cat is going to jump over the camera and the guy who took this shot. It's kind of creepy too. That's the impression I'm getting. Yes, the hair looks extremely good on some places while on others it will need a slight variation in size, thickness and direction. You can do it, I'm sure. David, you mentioned the eyes. Are the eyes of the cat part of the whole model or are they separate and thus texturable? If they're separate objects I believe it'll be a good idea to add a bit of depth in them by duplicating, the original eyes make smaller and to the duplica apply something like the diamond mat in Bryce with high refraction. Balance the size and voila. I think you can achieve good results by doing that. After all, the eyes are critical to character/animals for the final look. Good job here, nontheless!
