Some Ice
Description: Reverse normals after you apply hair to an object and you get some cool looking ice. I learned this technique from one of the blenderheads.
I used one of the sample scenes that came with carrara. Rendered with caustics, soft shadows, and 2-2 Good AA.

Wow. Those veins are very legitimate looking. Dynamic hair in Carrara6 is brilliant and for me it places Carrara in a league it never before occupied.

Now you just need to figure out how to make it look wet. Perhaps reflection and specularity.

thanks rashadcarter

hmmm carrara doesn't have specularity, after all specularity is just blurred reflection. and there is reflection in here, sooo

Extremely clever way to make ice! Thanks for showing that to us, Gat. If there'll be a next version of that precious Ice, I'll suggest you to render it on a blue- or white-tined metal surface and similar environment plus a bit of liqud beneath the ice. It'll be a killer. Right now it looks more like a special kind of mineral.

I had not noticed any specularity controls in Carrara, but as my experience with it is limited I thought that maybe it was just me. In light of the lack of this option I think that Richter's suggestion is nothing short of brilliant. Finding a way to get some blue in there would be great.

You say to download blender, but I do not understand what blender has to do with Carrara 6. I assume blender has dynamic hair also? That is a really cool feature for a free application. Please set me straight.

Okay. Blender it seems has alot to offer in general. not to mention for free! So if blender were for sale, how much do you think it's price would be considering the features it offers? Also, I always assumed blender was mostly a modeller, but how is it as a render engine? Does it have GI, or at least ambient occlusion and radiosity? please elaborate. Thanks

blender doesn't have GI but it does have AO, and radiosity, area lights, and a fast render engine, plus it has a compositor using nodes, and nodes for materials. It has powerful animation tools. If you need GI you can download YafRay, from inside blender you can switch render engines, but there are a lot of small things to know, the learning curve tough, carrara is much easier to learn.

Yup - more mineral than ice from the colours. The cracks, however, look very icy. Less yellow and brown and there you are. Difficult for me to appreciate because I'm far behind schedule with fooling around with C6. How about putting it into some context? Good job in any case.

Thanks for the clarification. I will download it soon before it goes off the net as a free program. It cannot remain free forever with these kinds of features.

oh don't worry about that it will always be free, blender community is one of the strongest once around, plus the blender foundation has ways of making money in order to support the progress.

Good trick! I'll have to remember that one! You could also use the particle generator to create some bubbles inside. Nice job!
