Oddball
Description: This is an attempt to use specular mapping. The materials are simple: the coloured balls have full Diffusion and 50 Reflection. The torii have Reflection set to 70 and the ground plane has Diffusion for grey at 100, Transparency set to 30 and reflection to 15.

Lit by the ?corridor-night2? HDRI (available on by web site). However, it was first specular convolved with a Phong exponent of 100. IBL Intensity and HDRI-Effect both at 17, rendered as background with 4096 lights, which took less than 2 hours.

Sadly enough, there is shadow banding visible even with the highest light setting.

Gorgeous! Very realistic of course. Specular mapping works well. Nice colors within the hdr. The banding is very unfortunate and disturbing at this high setting. Your machine must be powerful to render this in such a short time at such a high setting. Gorgeous! 5/5 The only methind to fix that banding would be to add a pattern of some sort to the ground plane to break up the impression of the banding.

Looks like the reflection value is set at 120%! LOL It's sort of wierd looking since the reflection of the floor on the balls washes the color out of them. Nothing is that shiney. Another thing is that, with such a reflective material, the HDRI lighting shows no sharply refrected light sources. It makes for an interesting effect but it looks unreal. The objects look too real and the lighting doesn't fit. Then there's the banding in the shadows that Rashad mentioned but that's simply a rendering flaw.

It's a beautiful image and I'm just acting the critic. LOL

A very striking image. As Spektyr observed, hyperrealistic - which in my book is a good thing, since otherwise, might as well and gone out and taken a photograph... well, actually given that Horo created the hdr, himself (with many photo's?) and made it available via his website... so has more than earned his points for this image. 5/5. The banding is irritating... using bumpy surfaces is one way to remove this but also consider using a lower quality of IBL and utilising the soft shadows option in premium render.

Thanks for your kind comments. Reflection is only at 70%. The green light is from the bathroom. It's all HDRI, its all reflection, nothing else. I left the shadow-banding to show that it still may occur with that many lights. I mainly did it for testing purposes while working on an HDRShop tutorial. I will try to get rid of the shadow banding in one way or another, I think it is worth the effort.
