I applied both tips: I made the ground plane bumpy, removed transparency and decreased diffusion. Lights were reduced from 4096 to 1024 and rendered with premium quality with soft shadows at 16 rays. It finished in 10 hours. There is still some shadow banding evident at left. I thought rendering with 64 rays and still 4096 lights would not be worth the trouble.
What a great experiment. It's good to see this and I will keep these lessons in mind. Great work of course as goes without saying in your case. For me the banding is forgivable. I really like the texture you used for the bump mapping.

Yes the surface is a very good material, reminds me of leatherette or some kind of finish used on speaker boxes. Definately worthy of a 5/5 in my book.
