Dream Cycle 2.2
Description: Since I've not done much with IBL being used as a background compaired with all the times I've used it as a light source, I throught I would try something out which comprised no sense of needing to be a "real thing" while at the same time could borrow that extra sense of realism from the use of the IBL and it being used as a background. Here simplistic materials are employed on a selection of bryce primitives. Hdr used was Horo's own corridor_night.hdr.

I got to say those material selections really add a lot to the design of the objects. The IBL added some nice soft shadows, but no clean reflections are there so you can't really tell the IBL is in the background, but that doesn't concern me, nice one!

Thanks. Yes, the effect of the IBL being used as a background seems subtle, at least it did to me - until I turned it off and used the standard bryce sky... then the reflective gold material under the bryce sky, became very "flat". So in spite of there not being very much to see in the reflections, as you observed, it does seem to have a profound impact on the appearance of these simple materials.

Intersting. You seem to have found a way to re-create specularity with IBL. The problem with reflection is usually that too much of what was used as backdrop is revealed. And the soft shadows are really very neat.

Looking at the hdr you supplied me with I found a very large bright area dominated the backdrop while otherwise it was dark, it is this bright blob which has provided the primory light source, the soft shadows and also the illusion of specularity. A design feature for future hdrs?

I like it

I really like the colors and the .hdriis really good. Horo is right, this basically reads as specularity, quite a cool effect. Awesome.

I can only suggest to replace the gray material on the plane with a different one. The compositoin looks very good, almost an absrtact work. The "gold" material seems very interesting. See the grainy reflection caused by this gold mat right under the main ring. I'm not sure if the IBL or the material itself is responsible for such a nice reflection. Is it a voronoi bump or maybe rendering in normal antialias (1ray/pixel)? On the little gold ball up and left I can see the ibl most clearly.

Gold. The render is Standard AA. The gold is just a lighter variant of the frosed gold material on my website in the resources section. The slight bump works to break things up a bit and give a slightly matt appearance to an otherwise reflective material. I'm glad you like it, it is one of my favourite materials.
