Bottled City
Bottled City

Bottled City
Description: The bottle is from the Glassware set (once at Daz 3D) and its size adjusted. Near the floor a 2D-Disk with a grass material from "Vegetation". The city is a self made terrain and the material comes with Bryce. The bottle rests on a Fading Disk from "Hypertextures Expansion" (both available at Daz 3D). Light and backdrop by the "Entre" HDRI (unpublished). A city packed in a glass bottle.

Well done picture. First I am surprised about the material of the city. You wrote "it comes with Bryce". It look quite nicde.
Second the glass material also looks great. What numbers have you used for Maximum Ray Depth and for TIR?

Thank you electro-elvis. 16 rays per pixel, max ray depth 6 and TIR default. Render time 3.5 hours.

It would be interesting to know, if the glass would look differently, when you use a TIR of 2. The default of TIR is, that it is not activated.

I always though if TIR is not selected, Total Internal Reflection is not limited. I plop rendered a part without TIR, with TIR 1, 4 and 10. I couldn't see a difference, render times were also the same for all tries.

As far as I know and also checked with a test picture: When TIR is not selected, the Internal Reflection is not calculated. But often the object is not suitable for calculating TIR at all, which could most probably the case with the bottle you used.

Thank you again for your comment. You are correct. After my test renders and my previous comment, I spent an afternoon to read about what TIR actually is. Then I made test renders, one is shown in the "Show Us Your Renderers Part12" DAZ forum. It seems to be important that the transitions are at some different angles and the max Ray Depth is high enough that the light can pass trough the the objects. Each surface is not only transparent but also mirrors a part of the light received. This reflection also passes through but at a different angle (Fresnel) and the final render result is usually darker as if when no TIR is used and all surfaces are just transparent.
