Sailors Delight
Description: This is more like the scene I was trying to capture, but still needs a lot of help (more brains on my end would help)

Much improved. The rock at right doesn't cast that shadow on the water anymore. The sails are very good thanks to the slight transparency. The lights in and on the ships are excellent. Also the sky is very dramatic. The water is still a bit of a problem. The waves seem good to me but the water doesn't look wet. There is probably too much reflection and too few transparency.

Thank you Horo. Ya, the water was a real problem because of the sky. I am having problems with water looking wet though. I'll give your tips a try.

Beautiful picture! Dramatic and warm, but as Horo mentioned, water looks like quicksiver, and You may try to make sun color less bright, to express late sunset.

Wet water? Horo and I discussed this very thing a while back, a very good while actually now that I think of it. Anyhow, the secret is exactly as Horo describes, but for good measure lets exploe the ideas separately

Wet water formula:

1. Water should be transparent above 90%. Even for deep ocean water you still want high transparency. You will deepen the appearance of the water by using high refraction, and dark color volume / transparency channel settings. More on that in a second.

2. Do not add unnecessary levels of reflection. Reflection effects are automatic when transparency is set properly. The way Bryce handles optics is that any transparency setting above 0 automatically initiates internal reflection. There are some exceptions to this rule, as Popgriffon has explored, but for me usually I find that adding reflection just ruins water effects.

3. Refraction must be set to between 105 and as high as needed. Refraction works similarly to absorption, it tells bryce how deeply light should penetrate a transparent surface before being absorbed. It has a hardening crystalizing effect and that is why high refraction is good for diamonds.

4. The different channels all have a strong impact on water. For water to look wet and not solid, you need to use 0 diffusion, none at all. And even with a diffusion setting of 0 the color you place in the diffusion color channel will still have a strong impact on the final water appearance (odd but true) so always use full white diffusion for maximum clarity. When you remove all diffusion a nd ambient glow you may find that the water appear very dark, which is good and correct. The sky color will be most essential to help brighten the color of the water through reflections of the environment.

5. Make sure you do not use any ambient glow at all.

6. Make sure you set the transparent and volume colors properly. Adding even just a tad bit of blueness to these channels adds great depth to the water without violating the transparency.

7. Use very little if any specularity at all, because in this case you have true reflectiuons and you do not need the plastic look of specularity.

Hope this helps. Otherwiise I would agree fully with the others that this is excellent!
