Dummy in Carrara 5 pro
Description: Lighting provided by Horo's living-night1_amx9-corr-wb.hdr which I evenutally did figure out how to import into Carrara - however I'm not entirely convinced yet that it is mapping correctly. Could be me though. The dummy model is on this site, made in wings 3D. Yellow, Blue and Red plastics are Carrara libuary mats, the dummy nipple I spent hours over trying (and failing) to get it to look how I wanted. This is the closest I came. It taught me a bit about the material handling and somewhat about the lighting - which is good and I also found out how to engage the DOF - not that I can remember now - so many menus! Clearly this is not up to the level of my Bryce image, the render took place over night, it was a long winded affair because I upped the qualtiy setting to see what would come out the other end.

I only have Carrera Basic but I haven't got the hang of it yet. I suppose you haven't neither. If Carrera can't do better, we'll gladly stick to Bryce, as flawed and limitted as it may be. From the angle of view it is difficult to assess whether the HDRI is correctly mapped. Looking at the nipple of the peacer, I would say it is not. Nevertheless, you are very brave to attempt such an elaborate project in a program you haven't fully masterted yet.

LOL I was trying to find DoF, still am. Also, I get the hrdi render as background, but I can't figure out how to use it as a light source. One thing I learned about Carrara is that bumping everything up is not a good idea it will just make a long render time. but you should be happy with the result I think it looks more realistic then the first version.

Popgriffon knows his stuff! I can see the point he was making in the bryce version. Yes, I think it may be more realistic here. The GI lighting in Carrara is causing me to fall in love. If ambient was used, it seems to have not turned into an evil force this time, a rare but still tangible occurance. I miss the soft shadows. The dof also seems a touch heavy, but that may just be due to comparing the two different renders. With a more specific ground plane, both versions would be ready for print.

To be honest I rather like the first one you did. It seemed more convincing. The light on the nipple is too much. It almost feels metalic. I don't know. It's great that your still trying new things. I guess even some of the more experienced of us still have room for higher learning.

Car as Carrara

Welcome amongst Carrara'ers, but I hope that doesn't meat that you're dumping Bryce? ;) I use Carrara for 2 years now (over a year as main renderer) and still find Bryce great fun..

To the point: I think(but I'm not sure) that Horo's HDRIs are all in polar projection probe format, They are great for Bryce, but Carrara cannot use them properly, HDRI for Carrara must be in panoramic format, so there's no exchange - Bryce can't use panoramas.
You need 2 separate libraries of HDR images. So I think that strange reflection on the rubber is from polar probe mapped as panorama..

For material (top shader in Car lingo) I suggest multichannel - there you'll find all material channels (shaders) you need. There's subsurface scattering - (use color, but different than in "color" shader), and translucency (value).

About Car GUI - there's one rule: one should know what feature he wants to use, and what exactly is this feature, then the controls of this feature are in logical place, and easy to find.
For example: DOF is camera property effect, so you have to select camera, and it's controls are in properties panel (right hand panel in assembly room, upper part, effects tab),
but DOF is also raytracing setting so it has to be activated there (right hand panel in render room, upper part, settings tab).

Another one: HDRI is part of the background of the scene, so you have to select "scene" (only in browser), then turn background into HDRI (everything is in right panel),
but it's also part of Global Ilumination lighting - GI (in render room) has to be turned on.

Sorry for long post, hope it's helpful.

Thanks for the explinations. I've not even begun to scratch the surface of the program. It will keep my busy for another couple of years learning the inns and outs I imagine. I don't intend to give up on Bryce, it is just that many of the limitations I experiance are in the renderer where I can't do very much about them so I thought I would try out a different renderer and see what's what. That way I know what extra features to badger DAZ for when it comes to updating Bryce.

couple of years? Try two weeks! I am learning this baby before school starts, that way I don't need to memorize complex equations and the location of scene settings. Well, am on page 291, hopefully I finish the other 590 in the next 2-3 days, then I will know everything that Carrara can do. Of course same as with Bryce there be things that the manual just does not cover as well as things that don't work. I already found 2 very serious flaws using photo rendering, neither one can be solved with the highest quality. As well as frequent freeze ups.

Dave, the ambient channel is in the scene properties, just click scene in the tree display, and go to setting one window above that one. Its on most of the time that I noticed.

Thanks. I'm a slower reader and an even slower digester of manuals. At 860 pages, it will take me weeks. Freeze ups - aye - no software is without it's quirks.

Well, most of the stuff Carrara can do I already know what it is from blender, now I just need to know what Carara has and how to find it. Also I am not a fast reader either, I just got time right now during summer.
