MDMM Alien Planet Close Encounter

This is a zoom shot of one little zone of the Image i posted before.

Took a long time to render using low priority. But it did not crash so my idea of using low priority seems to be working [on my computer at least].

Looks like a sort of meld between "The Matrix" and the "Death Star". I would suggest you do not venture to close to this cosmic anomaly.

This is just fun stuff and i am just experimenting.

I could do much better if i had the time.

To get really cool planetary surfaces with MDMM, you need to model your own planet in great detail and then render it as Grey-scale Map using a Panorama to Spherical Map Transformer.

You need to render the model from the inside using Bryce Ambient Painter.

In case you are confused, consider this: Build a cube, octahedron, dodecahedron or other such object, such as for instance many terrains placed suitably and evenly on a sphere. You are building an abject to render a map and NOT the final object itself. AND you are looking at the object from the inside!

You could build your own Torroidal Lens System for capture or use Horo's and David's "Spherical Mapper".

To texture the model for the Spherical Capture, use Distant Origin Texture in World Space [Black and White only]. Make sure the Model and the Spherical Mapper are at World Center, then adjust the gradient in the DTE so the highest points on the model are white and the lowest black. Since you are looking from the inside, white is furthest away from the camera at this stage of the process.

Note then when using BOIP Engines [involving mirrors and lenses], Distance, Mask and Altitude renders do not work as expected. Also Collimators - like putting a Camera inside a transparent cube with zero refractive index - do not work either. Therefore you will have to create the grey-scale maps [which mimic distance from the camera and so on] using Bryce Ambient Painter.

Once you have the Spherical Map rendered you can use it in the MatLab and apply it on the D channel as a picture TO A SPHERE. Test render and save as Diffuse/Ambient before engaging the displacement marble! Then you can disengage Diffuse and Ambient and use those for other things.

One day when i have time i will show you. Or perhaps Horo or David may do a tutorial.

I am a Bryce Purist but about a decade ago i used to make models for Bryce using LightWave 3D. At that time my Bryce modelling skills were not as good as they are now and Bryce also did not have MetaBalls [they came with versions 5].

So this is a Bryce 4 Reloaded Job done in 7.1 and using one of my special wide angle lenses not to mention colour filters and much else.

Lots of post work all done ONLY in Bryce!

I had to split the image in two and reassemble it in Bryce because the composit plate limit is 1024 and this image is wider then that.

You can probably spot the seam running vertically down the middle.

I am still pleased with this one because it would have been hard to do all that post work in Photoshop.

There is an insert [bottom right] of the LightWave Alien ship i created a long time ago.

Micro-Displacement_Map_Modelling

Here is just a sample of the many different things that can be done with MDMM. Good both for making detailed 3D surfaces and also modelling some difficult forms.

If you are new to MDMM then some advice.

The displacement map must use the color channel but is applied to displacement in the Mat Lab. Set up the grey-scale as a color output and fine tune it to your liking. I usually use the D Channel. When you have got it right engage the displacement. But not before you save your work.

The maximum resolution you can set for the micro-polygons is 0.005 [attributes window]. If you set it higher, Bryce will either crash or revert back to 0.005. The default is 0.01. If you are new to this leave that setting alone.

I always use maximum resolution.

If you get a crash when you render. reload the file then do this: turn Nano Preview OFF and set render priority to LOW. Always save all your edits before you start a render.

Once you get a hang of it you will know what sort of conditions will cause a crash and how to avoid them.

MDMM works well with Round Stones, Terrains, Spheres and Cylinders. I have also used it on cubes. Converted MetaBall Hulls can be a problem though.
