Hochgebirge (high mountains)
Description: First attempt for a glacier; here, in the making, at it's beginning. It's easier to critisize then doing better, hence I owe this effort to David. He didn't put it that way, but he's right: the mat is more important (and difficult to handle) then the terrain itself. I'm not overly convinced by the result but consider it as a valid start.

Good start!

I, personally, like the mat better than the mountains. Also, the sky needs some work if you want to get the feel of a high and snowy place. the volumetric clouds, however, are a very good addition

Sky

I went to great length to get that hazy sky, but I do agree with you. It looks boring, even though it could indicate a change of weather for tomorrow. I tried that pic-sky idea of yours, but it is not so easy as it looked in the first place. Challenging to get the light right. Now, I appreciate your pic with that sky even more.

My sky?

I didn't do anything special to the lighting for the pic sky. I just took the deafault sky and added some haze. nothing special. also, the more I look at that mat the more I appreciate it. Could you upload that material? I think it would look good on a terrain like david's "getting closer to the ice".

Interesting

It is good to see a bit of reasearch going to putting together materials - I nearly missed this pic because of a number of unfortunate incidents - such as my computer being flattened to mend XP and my timeing belt snapping on my work van (which is still something of a trauma) - but hey, these things are sent to try us, so anyhow, enough excuses from me, materials, the basic tactic I employ is...er well just tried to download your mat, thinking I might work on it a for a bit of fun but it seems to be broken because all I got was the bluebellwood mat - oh dear. Suppose you could always email it to me if you felt so inclined.

Sorry guys

I replaced the mat and it should work now. Fiddled around half an afternoon to get it right. I still don't know exactly, how this happens. But after about the 10th export, the mat seemd to behave as expected.
