Cloud

Some of the cloud is a sphere with one of the bryce volume material cloud types applied (rain cloud I think) but quite a bit of time was spent matching sky colours and this clouds colours (like putting in a think blue fog to match the volume clouds diffuse colour) so that the two are - nearly - seamlessly blended. I really enjoy using the volume clouds - but - the thing that always puts me off is the render time - hence the cheating - the rest of the sky is just - well - sky.

Petition

I feel that natural and unnatural cloud/sky effects is Bryce's strong suit, it was certainly what first attracted me to the package - so I hope you have like me visited the save bryce petition site - I put a link in on my rainbow picture description. I believe I was number 1397 which is not a huge number... so I think they would appreciate all the help they can get?

You are right.

I tried that but I didn't think it looked as good. I don't know, it's a big subject, but I tend to feel that photogtaphy has put an end to 'art' having to be about reproducing reality. Yes, it is fun and it is a challenge to try to produce 'real' scenes. I do appreaciate that. But I mostly I like images that have a kind of hyperreal edgeiness about them - like the kind of visual equilivent of that feeling you got when you watched the matrix for the first time or fight club - is this making sense? No sorry. :0.

Agreed - 194 hrs is my record (slow machine)

I never seem to have more than one computer working at once. The sides never go on my machines, that's the kiss of death - don't know if it's a ventilation issue or just a jinx. I would be interested to know if anyone has used the networking software - all I've done with LAN's deathmatching and that was unstable and glitchy - which to my mind does not bode well for any network rendering project...

lightning

Lightning is one of the picture tube images from psp7. Black 1024x1024 painted down three bolts and saved as a bmp. Placed a 2D square very close to the camera (to defeat the fog) set diffuse and ambient channels to pict (parametric) and loaded in the bmp into image and alpha slots. Finally set material to blend transparency and use the pict alpha channel to take out the black background. Flash is a lightsource put in the scene where the lightning looks like it should be. :0)

psp7

That's paint shop pro 7 - sorry about the TLA's (Three Letter Acronims) - just lazyness. I use psp7 and occasionally corel photopaint - some of the procedural textures make useful terrain maps for seawater.

Forest

This is a breathtaking picture. Thanks for the information about the lightening bolt. What I would like to know is how you get all those trees onto the hills.

Trees

Well, I know I have explained this once somewhere, but no worries, this is how it works. You take the existing terrain, copy it, wind up the detail to as much as your processor can take, ie 2048 x 2048 if you can hack it, and then add noise, this makes it massively spiky and really slows your computer down (or at least it did mine) that done I applied a kind of stripy material, just something semi transparent a bit like a kind of blurry grass so that the trees look fuzzy instead of like a load of rocky spikes and there you have it. It does not work very well if you look too close but on a large scale like this you can get away with a lot. Oh you may have to move the spiky terrain down a bit and stretch it around so that the spikes alone poke thro' the main terrain but that's just faffin.
