Metaballs

Connect thro proximity - if in doubt group them. For interesting effects try mingling meta balls of differing materials and sometimes you get pleasent blending effects - particulary interesting if you set material to blend transparency and use something like a grid to control the alpha channel on transparency - instead of full transparency which you would expect you get a glass like effect which can then be blended - as described.
