Technocity
Description: While many of you have been busy doing waterfalls I've been inspired by Tunji Olaogun's architectural images to have a go at one of my own. Like the lazy lazy person that I am I've used a single terrain for the entire model and tried to create the effect of complexity through using slope and altitude sensitive high octive techno material and some carefully placed volumetric fog.

ooo

It looks more like 30 terrains really :o) The way you've created the terrain and modified it to your liking is most impressive. I love the material used too, may I ask how you did the material?

Material mystery tour...

If you look in the presets you will find Alien Tree Bark I think it is under Wild&Fun - go into the material editor and into the texture editor and chage it from 2D to 3D then wind up the octaves a bit say somewhere between 4 and 6 that will give you a nice complex techno pattern to work with - make sure you check the alpha channels because you will be using these to controll reflection. So with this texture in the A slot set up one set of colours and this copied into the B slot set up a different techno pattern maybe a bit darker with a second level of slope blending to add a bit of interest and use the C channel to control the alitute switch between the A and B using something like basic altitiude texture but change the algorythem to techno for a more angular transition effect. Once all this is sorted set three dots in A B and C for diffuse channel, ambient, bump and reflection so everthing is working in symphony and it's as clear as mud right? Similar routine to the bluebell wood material except instead of C controlling slope it's in charge of altitude and all the slope mods are done in texture with slope blending - which is also in evidence in the bluebell woods. If in doubt ask more questions.

questions

1 - the rusty texture is in the texture exchange area - dig in there with the deep editor and all with become apparant.

2 - the choice is yours, I'd (if you haven't already done so) download wings3d from their website and have a play with that. You could use pict's for speed but you don't get the same quality as a proper 3d model - for something in the distance you could get away with that but close to... I think it would show. It all depends on how far you want to push the envelope, I generally stop when I feel I have the effect I wanted - but there is always room for improvement - but that's just how I feel, I don't want to impose my views on others, we all have to find our own way. ;o)

Nice

I used to try and make stuff like that but then I discovered that I'm a lot better at making Starships and robots. I have to say that thats pretty damn amazing by any standards and the volumetric fog definatly gives it a special touch.
