Micro-Displacement_Map_Modelling
Description: Here is just a sample of the many different things that can be done with MDMM. Good both for making detailed 3D surfaces and also modelling some difficult forms.

If you are new to MDMM then some advice.

The displacement map must use the color channel but is applied to displacement in the Mat Lab. Set up the grey-scale as a color output and fine tune it to your liking. I usually use the D Channel. When you have got it right engage the displacement. But not before you save your work.

The maximum resolution you can set for the micro-polygons is 0.005 [attributes window]. If you set it higher, Bryce will either crash or revert back to 0.005. The default is 0.01. If you are new to this leave that setting alone.

I always use maximum resolution.

If you get a crash when you render. reload the file then do this: turn Nano Preview OFF and set render priority to LOW. Always save all your edits before you start a render.

Once you get a hang of it you will know what sort of conditions will cause a crash and how to avoid them.

MDMM works well with Round Stones, Terrains, Spheres and Cylinders. I have also used it on cubes. Converted MetaBall Hulls can be a problem though.

Great information! I've once played around a bit with displacement and I could make it work. It appears that you have investigated this in depth. Hope I'll get the time to play with it a bit more. Your examples are a very encouraging.

Thanks Horo

I don't have much time either. So my examples are not as diverse or as good as i know they could be [and i would have liked to show more impressive examples]. But i like to encourage other people. I know how discouraging it is when Bryce crashes all the time when you are trying to create something. I had that encounter with the "Instancing Lab" which led me to write that long tutorial which is now safe at home on your website. After many months battling with this "Instancing Lab" i learned to predict what might cause a crash and so i became more productive.
