Description: Hiro is from DAZ 3D and the fanblades on the floor made in Wings3D by David and downloaded from the 3ds Models repository here http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=1879. The environment is an HDRI I shot a while ago. It also gives the light. Rendered with 1024 quality in 22 minutes.

The character herself looks very good. I like the cloth textures a great deal. There is some shadow banding which is making the blending of the hdri with the rendered information harder to fully accept. There is a slight unusual pattern developed over the hand that touches the fan. It's quite a challenge to shadow catch so many "surfaces" within the scene. Much better than I could have done.

I love the background. It reminds me of a scene in the first part of the movie "Men in Black". The woman is well lighted. First I did not realize, that the wooden box in the foreground is added by you, too. The only thing I am not fully convinced, but I am not sure, is the woman's shadow.

Thank you Rashad, electro-elvis. What cannot be seen in the image that there is a large opening on the ceiling leading to the upper floor with the diesel generators, of which what we see are the coolers. The light is switched on and contributes, hence the shadows.

The shadow from the hand did not dully turn out as I wished. Banding is a problem of IBL and I tried to render with few light (low quality) and use IBL soft shadows. The render time was so high that I abandoned the idea.

A problem of IBL is that the lights are at infinite distance, but in a room they are near. We'll have to push for an option to size the sphere with the lights to adapt to the backdrop.

I don't know what to say about the hdri you used. The blend is almost perfect, as mentioned. I can close my eyes slightly and look past the shadow banding and voila! - that girl is there...it's all one piece with the backdrop. I am impressed.
About the problem - Have you tried with spotlights or radials to mimic how the room should be lit? The scene being set in such a (perceptibly) tight space with faint lighintg we can assume we don't need too much indirect bounced light for the end result so use simple bryce lights to shine over the floor and other models (leaving shadows almost pitch black) while keeping the ibl quality as low as possible. I believe the banding will "sink" inside the simple lights' shadows and become preactically invisible. For now that's just in my head, I could be very wrong...

Thank you richter. There is definitely room for improvement. The goal was to use no other light than the HDRI and what was needed to capture the shadows. The HDRI used proved to be not the easiest one for the task.
