Remnant
Description: Michael 3 and the skeleton are from DAZ3D. I would have liked to get the skeleton equally blurred as the backdrop, but the transparent shadow catching 2D-disk makes the backdrop very blurred. This is an issue David and I have discovered quote a while ago. The dead reed is about two feet thick and while looking for a more appropriate place for the camera, I sank up to the ankles into the swamp water just about where the skeleton sits. Light and backdrop are from the Swamp HDRI I took three days ago. This is therefore a render with natural light.

That backdrop looks very good indeed in this render - and considering the complex nature of the surface and the shadows already present I suggest you could get away without any shadow capture and have the blur effect you want.

The light is good on the skeleton but I wonder if perhaps a smidgeon of grey/blue ambient might just take the edge of the dark shadows and offer a closer blend. Only perhaps... it's a fine line with ambient as you know.

Remnant is a nice title, evocative and a moderately unusual word. Good work 5/5 for your labours and the soggy ankles.

Thank you David. Yes, a tiny bit of ambient would help the skeleton. There are indeed only very few shadows cast from it, the colour is slightly different (saturation 33% instead of 0). The shadow catching, which took me so much time to set up, could probably have been omitted. The render time, though, was acceptable with less than two and a half minutes in normal priority.

Even if it is sort of a "cheap" render, I like it very much. I spent several hours struggling for a name. This picture gives me very different feelings, it could be viewed as the beginning of something, a sad moment or decay. I couldn't even find a name in my own tongue. Remnant (in the sense of left over) appeared to me as giving a lot of options.how to interpret it.

Knowing a bit about what goes into getting a HDRI image such as this (not even including the extra trauma of being in a swamp) I hardly think anyone would dare to call the render "cheap".

Remnant is also reminiscent of other words like reverent and perhaps mire (I mean more) interesting revenant which has a pertinent meaning http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revenant

Where is the cartoon character? Art is about expressing an idea, this must not necessarily be realistic. I don't quite understand what you mean with professionalism and optional artwork.

Ah - you think the "soldier" is in the photograph. No, it's Michael 4 from DAZ, a 3D figure I put on cloth and posed. The same I used here http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=4682 and here http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=4073. The background is not a 2D face but a spherical tone mapped high dynamic range image which produces the image based light. This is the full panorama http://www.horo.ch/photos/hdri/html/hswamp_en.html The scene is rendered with natural light.

The hdri is wonderful. I love the colors and the overall warmth of it. The rendered items look fine with a few considerations. The skin on the face of the soldier looks like it might have some form of noise, maybe reflection or something. The shadows on the skeleton are a lit heavy on the undersides. This is one of those places where some upward light would be helpful.

The language barrier with Waleed makes it difficult to understand what he is saying. I think he is saying that the backdrop and the rendered items dont quite mesh perfectly, which I can agree with. But then again, marrying rendered items and photos has never been easy.

I am fascinated by the hdri itself. I am looking at the indirect light as it affects the tree trunks. Beautiful hdri!!!
