The law of reflection
The law of reflection

The law of reflection
Description: Bryce 7 Pro

All objects are modeled in Bryce. All textures is procedural, excepting the text of the book and foliage.
Render time is 12 hours.

The big render time is caused by presence of several glass objects, mode of Blend Transparency in a material of foliage and several arrays Sphere Dome Light.

As it is known, the mirror in Bryce reflects subjects, but can't reflect light. Therefore the subjects reflected in a mirror, have a dark back surface that contradicts to the truth. This surface should be lit from a light source reflected in the mirror. In this work I have tried to solve this problem. This is done as follows.
With the help of Boolean operations in a wall cut out the hole on the size of a mirror. The mirror is a 2D Disk with a disabled property "Cast Shadow" in the material. Thus, the mirror becomes transparent for rays of light. We accept a wall for a symmetry plane. We duplicate the basic light source (at me Sphere Dome Light) and place it on the other side of wall symmetrically with respect to the original. This will be an imaginary source that lit from the mirror. Brightness of imaginary source do less than the original. It is caused by absorption of light by a mirror material. Also in the material of the mirror, I made the reflection coefficient of 85% for the same reasons. The imaginary source shines through a transparent mirror and illuminates subjects from the back side. The last are reflected in a mirror and looks plausibly.
As you can see, all is simple. And still three years ago I couldn't solve this problem.
In this scene I duplicated auxiliary light sources too. The two Sphere Dome Light on 9 sources in each. Though actually enough to make imaginary only the basic source. But this, as well as absorption coefficients, is necessary expect under a concrete scene.
Thank you for your comments.

You did it again, Alex. Very nicely done and superbly lit. Yes, it is a pitty Bryce mirrors can only reflect objects but not light. The "trick" you've used is the one I've used on several occasions, too, though only using a single radial. Your setup is much more elaborate and the result is accordingly better.

Amazing image SlepAlex!!!!! The lighting looks excellent. You have really mastered these concepts. Love the way you found of getting light onto the back of the objects. The wall material is nice but a little distracting in some places. Still, this deserves full marks!!!!
