Nice render Sam, the bob,wave and pole look great, but i think the DOF could be a little lighter, i would like to see a little more of the background, but thats just personel tatse, Good job

Well, the focus is definitely where the fishing happens. I agree with STKidd that a bit less DOF would have been more. The waves on the water are very good.

The dof is definitely too strong, but the feeling of the piece is spot on. I feel like I'm standing there with the pole in hand. Nice job!

well your eye goes straight to the float and the end of the rod, so all crit aside it does what i guess you intended it to do, great job

DOF is really used here to emphasize the bob, because it makes the central part of the composition. But that's not the only reason. The thing is that the surroundings are modelled rather primitively. This image is one of those where I learnt possibilities of a human eyesight. Anyhow, no one will argue that a human eye really thinks to the end some details that are not present. Thus, DOF such strong as this, was used in order to deceive the eye and for example, pose a primitive terrain with some noize and with uncomplicated texture as a growing on the steep bank deep forest. :-)
