Above the methane clouds
Description: Rendered in Bryce 7.1.0.109 Pro

Hdri and city prop from here http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=13257

Which was made by Horo and myself.

The terrain material was made from two tiling photographs sent to me by Horo and processed in Crazy Bump.

The terrains themselves were created in Bryce, filtered in Grome, tiled in Genetica, and a self occlusion map generated as shown here http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=12763 essentially, using global lighting and bakeing the shadows into a map which then drives the diffuse effect.

"Big Sur" clouds as were supplied in the free content that comes with Bryce 7.1 Pro. Flipped over (the entire slab) so that the underside is now the top for this above the cloud effect.

That came out beautifully. When I saw it in the DAZ gallery, I thought that it was submitted by a valued customer of the product. I like to see renders that use those. Next entry will be from STKydd, I reckon. Thank you for purchasing our products!

God i just love the powerful glowing light in the sky. The methane clouds are a good idea, but somehow they don't fully convince me.

First, I will say that there might be some scaling discrepancy. The scene overall looks small and intimate, yet if within those pods are supposed entire cities, then the overall impression of the scene is too small. Due to the vacuum of space, haze cannot be employed to help convey scale, highly unfortunate. I have no solution for this problem, just thought I'd mention it. Beautiful image.

Your observations about scale I think are quite correct, I am reminded of images of glaciers (which are not native to Lincolnshire so I have no direct experience of them) in clear air above the clouds, with no points of reference to the true scale of these features, similar problems arise. In this scene, I think I could get away with a couple of Eagles from Space 1999 suspended from fishing line...
