Stanford Sisters (featuring the Stanford Dragon)
Description: Stanford repository http://graphics.stanford.edu/data/3Dscanrep/

As with the previous two images, this is merely a trial of the new improved TA scattering correction. Here, instead of reflection, specularity was used to create the glossy appearance, cutting the render time down by half.

Otherwise much the same as the others...

Bryce update 7.1.0.109 - available here http://forum.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=173120 had a nice and unexpected surprise. Vasily (I'm guessing) has tinkered with the scattering correction and reduced the noise considerably. This is very good news.

Like all TA renders this took - a while - for which mean hours rather than minutes to render.

Also, I'd like to point out that Horo and I have finally had our mentoring DVD released. You can look at that here, should you so desire, http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=13196 it is on sale at the moment. I will also try to badger DAZ into further sales at some point in the future. I understand also, that from any time soon, shipping costs will also be applied and those will not be lifted again.

Mac users continue to draw the short straw I'm sorry to report. Even with this new update, issues remain. Check the forum here for updates on this situation, http://forum.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=173785

The specular effect comes nicely through in this render.

Thanks Horo, but more by accident than design, what I was looking for was a substitute for reflection which even at low levels in a TA render will more than double the render time. The specular in this case works well with the material bump I feel and gives the models a "silky" finish.

Iridescence ???

Iridescence ??? It does look like true iridescence even tho it wasn't intended. Happy accident, eh? Or pewter effect... Almost like a combo iridescence and pewter. What render setting did you use and can the material set like gold or some other precious metal mat be used to set it up to look as silky like these?
Did you ever try using the displacement in these rendering?

I'll see if I can't post this material up in the exchange for you to play with. It needs a lot of light to work with, since it followed the "high absorption" recipe suggested in Stoneheap - http://www.daz3d.com/i/shop/itemdetails/?item=12687 - you'll see what I mean when you see the material.

I think the approach can be used for any material/metal effect, but you will find that the setting of the light is very critical. There is only a narrow range where the surface will respond and reproduce the colours you want. I'm not entirely certain why this is, but I suspect it is due to the internal calculations of the rendering process being handled at a much higher dynamic range than what is presented. It might be possible to set some experiments up with HDRshop to verify this - I don't know yet. Its all experimental - that's a lot of the fun for me. Just poking around and finding stuff out.

Every time I try using displacement I end up crashing Bryce. I want to use displacement, I want to like this feature, but until it stops crashing I cannot. One thing I cannot abide is software that crashes. It's very annoying. So I tend to stick to the features that work - of which there are many. And thanks to Horo, there is now an incredible scope for new effects to be discovered using IBL. Horo the IBL master has made Bryce the master of IBL.

The effect you see here, in case you didn't realise is driven mostly by IBL. Only a HDRI can produce the brightness needed to stimulate this material. I'll get it posted for you as soon as maybe.

This is a very special looking result, David. I like it.
