Great Big Waterfall

Great Big Waterfall
Description: This started out as a beach scene (really) but when I applied the breaking edge wave material to the, as yet, squashed down terrain, I thought - ahhh, that looks more like a waterfall. So still no beach scene, sigh, but got a waterfall instead, bonus! Happy accident - hope you like it.

Cheers! What can I say - I was lucky :0)

Previous attempts as waterfalls had all included trying to use very clear speculative water - this time, by accident I ended up a material intended for foamy seawater. Nothing to stop you having another go - foamy seawater might just do it for you too!

It helps if you are lucky...

Took a terrain 1024x1024 and painted a stripe across it to full height. Eroded it. Added slope noise. Applied a material (a bumpy sort of water I'd made to look like sea that was foamy on top - think the white on top helps - slope sensitive) and that to me looked like a waterfall so I decided that's what it would be - and not a beach scene as I had intended. Oh and I copied the terrain and shrank it slightly so as to hide the rocks better. Same terrain copied with differnt material used as a template for the rocks. And a bit of volume cloud to hide the bottom of the falls which I didn't really have a clue what to do with!

Water Splash

David I noticed that at the bottom of your waterfall the rough water look like a seperate mountain terrain. Well i have a water splash surface texture and it works brilliantly in these situations. I think u could do alot more with it than I could. Ill send it to you. Just let me know if u want it. Great work cheers.

metaballs...

I rarely use metaballs for anything because I find they slow my machine down too much. The waterfall itself is a terrain with a water material applied to it, no need to squash terrain to make them thinner usually beause they default state is 2D anyway, like a rumpled table cloth - if you take my meaning. So for a waterfall what I used was essentally an eroded giant terrain step - with slope noise applied and a water material.

A step, the first step...

Ok, create a terrain and goto into the terrain editor, press new so it is black square and then paint half of it white (to full height) - this should provide you with a giant step, the side of which will become your waterfall once all the other bits have been done to it. Clear now? Or clear as mud. Sorry never been very good at explaining stuff.

Waterfall material?

Yep I'll put it in the stuff to post - no problem - might be a few days before it appears up there, I don't maintain the site myself (bit of a web dunce I must shamefully admit) but as soon tiny island software have a window I'll get them to sort it and put a notice on the forum. Thanks for your kind comments, but as I said the results are more accident than design!
