Finally, after all those discussions at various places, I opt for the IBL variant simply because it looks more in tune with the sky - assuming real-looking was the goal.

Hmn... OK I will see if I can overcome that discrepancy... It will probably increase the render time still further on TA but that is the "price" of TA.

Probably, decreasing saturation for the sky HDRI would already help. I'm not very enthusiastic to enter into the IBL vs TA discussion. Each one has its merits and shortcommings, there is no method that fits all as some of the overzealous claim in their religious crusades.

Comparing the methods for different applications and scenes is good and very helpful as long as we can compare apples with apples and free of all emotional righteous allegations, i.e. in a true scientific manner. I know that this is what you attempt. I have others in mind.

I know you Horo, yes, but at the same time, a good old ding dong on the forum garners badly needed attention for IBL and TA. People will judge images with their eyes and decide what they like, no matter how many times we are told to believe this or that, the proof of the pudding is in what is seen.
