Instancing and TA1 (Bryce 7 pro)
Description: One terrain with just shy of 5000 trees instances onto it. The light is provided by softened (35) Bryce sun (400) and True Ambience at 64 rpp. Render time three quaters of an hour.

The scene wouldn't tollerate a volumetric cloud, that was asking a bit too much. IL crashed only once on me, which is something of a record, but the interface became dog slow.

This image was inspired by C-ram's recent submission http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=4415&mode=search were we got to talking about lighting and Horo raised the question of image contrast. Here I've tried to retain effect of the humidity, but been careful to strip out ambient, sky dome and have shadow intensity set to 100.

I know this is many leagues off the complexity favoured by Rashad, but still, there is a slim chance I might be able to make friends with the Instancing Lab if it continues to exhibit this level of stability.

Rashad, I would particularly appreciate your comments on this scene and the lighting employed since this is very much your area of expertise. And, of course, anyone else who cares to comment!

For me, lighting looks very good. I like the level of contrast. I envy people who can do more than just a few spheres on the groundplane with the IL.

I'm not sure but it appears as if the camera FOV was set quite wide. The trees at the left and right lower corners look distorted. Nothing wrong with that, though. Distortion is a must for those going for foto-realism.

What a pride for me! I'm glad I could inspire you david. Magnificent use of I.L, it's very conclusive.

We can see all the finesse of jobs provided by the TA mode. The contrast is perfect on this picture.

By the past you had encountered problems with I.L, but as you could test here, Daz has made serious patches with version 7.0.2.3.5 beta of bryce pro. I hope that these changes will make you take another way with the software.

If your scenes are already big inspiration to all of us, I dare not imagine what happened next with the mastery of the IL .. I'm really stunned.

Fullmarks of course and 5 stars!

Thank you.

Horo, as you know, like Clay I favour the extreme FOV. It give more sky - more clouds - and hides somewhat the jelly-mold nature of the terrains.

C-ram, I feel a bit undiserving here, the light methods I've explored extensively already and I've exhibited very little control over IL. Hence the trees glued to the cliff faces. What I have done is crashed IL 52 times in the course of my using it today. And nealy gnawed my mouse mat in half with frustration at the slugishness of Bryce once it has a few instances in play. What I hope I have demonstrated is True Ambience and instancing need not be mutually exclusive. And that the complex geometries generated by use of instancing are a good subject matter for TA lighting.

Absolutely lovely, David. The haze interaction does a very good job of establishing the required scale. The trees as I mentioned before are a good start, in addition somehow a ground level layer of vegetation needs to be considered, as from this distance the procedural grass in not convincing on its own of natural complexity. Ground level vegetation is very tricky to implement in tandem with tree level vegetation while remaining within memory allowances. Then consider the system slowdown!

The TA is shrinking the scene to some degree, but the haze is compensating perfectly, which makes me curious to test out some TA and haze interactions. I would have liked a somewhat more focused sun, not so fuzzy. The high level of moisture indicated by the fuzzy sun seems to contradict the indirect light levels, such conditions should spread light much more evenly around the landscape, filling in shaded areas much more.

Generally, I like the way TA is working in this scene. Your render times are not yet prohibitive, but I wonder if that would change with the added complexity of ground level vegetation. I also wonder how the TA would fare when rendering a V4 with blend transparent hair materials.

The pov is perfectly chosen, the viewer falls into the image, a cool feeling.

Top marks. A sure step in the right direction.
