Gremlin's Hall (Orton)
Description: The initial submission was critisised as being noisy, and rightly so. A difference in noisyness could only be discerned when premium with 256 rpp was selected - which meant for the 2 hour render more than 3 days. I therefore resorted to render it as 4k x 3k picture, which finished in a bit less than half a day with the idea to downscale it. This did the trick about the noise.

On second thought, this is a fairy place and there's no harm making it look a bit fairy. I don't use Orton filters because I have my own ideas how to implement it. So I upscaled the previous render, blurred it with an appropriate radius and boosted the intensity, then mixed it with the large render, and downscaled the result.

Certainly you have achieved a dream like quality to this image. This hurts my eyes in another way, it makes me feel like it is not quite in focus. Which is sounding a bit hypercritical I know. The glow works very well, true. And the blurring, almost... if you are willing, I'd like to take a look at the source since this problem has piqued my interest now. I can't deny you your points, but I still believe, possibly erroniously, there is a way to unravel the noise entirely.

Thank you David. The Orton effect may make your eyes hurt, at least they make mine. There is a focused and an unfocused part at the same distance. The blooming somehow doesn't fit our visual experience. I'll send you the source to have a look how the noise can be reduced without the need of a 3 days render.

You know, I do like this one too. At fiorst I thought is did not like it but I had to let go of the impression of the original and take this one for what it is. The storybook dreamy feel is quite nice. It seems somehow friendlier and loses all of the sinister undertones it had before. Cool! I may need to experiment with this Orton effect. is it a sheet placed in front of the camera or something?

Thank you, Rashad. No, the effect was added in post. I'm going to send you an email about this. An interesting effect, but it can be overdone. On second thought, it might be interesting to tackle how this could be done directly in Bryce.
