Gremlin's Hall
Description: The Gremlins are from DAZ3D. Two terrains, one on top of the other, make up the cave. Both terrains have the same material ernie (from the DAZ forums) generously sent me. They have 10% Displacement, a new material feature in Bryce 7. The scene is in a mirrorbox and conventionally lit by four radials and three faint radials with inverse and ranged falloff for the cheerful chaps.

Wonderfully coloured but I find the image a bit too noisy to be satisfied. I'm curious about the noise being generated, I've seen this before and if this has been rendered at normal AA. In the past, I've found that "material noise" - as opposed to other sources - can be very sucessfully processed with 16 rpp, fine art or premium rendering. If this can be done, it is easy enough to test on a small area.

Compositionally, colour wise, content - mirror box indeed - everything else, is good, my only issue is noise. What do you think?

Noise - yes, yes, yes, I fully agree. Normal render 23 minutes, AAing another 1-1/2 hours. Nothing fancy, no TA, no HDRI, no transparencies except water. I attributed this to displacement. I started a 64 rpp premium render but I didn't fancy to wait for a day. But yes, I'll try that 16 rpp premium. I love this picture but I hate the noise. It would make me happy if I could get rid of it. Thanks for the tip.

Yes the displacement is a bit of a render hog and no mistake, however the kind of material noise I've encounted before can be delt with in 16 rpp. The sampling for Premium or fine art is greatly improved over standard for this issue. I discovered this due to experimenting with TA and noticed the difference in the material was quite dramatic for materials with high frequency components.

What an odd piece of art. Horo, you are such a freak! The image is oddly frightening, yet welcoming with the grin on his face, very clever work. that expression combined with the light is really magnificent. Nice work man!!!

This is clearly a magical place, where physical laws are not exactly respected., very cool.

The noise is a distraction, but I am not sure if there is anything that can be done to fix it. After a moment or two the brain starts filtering out the noise to some degree.

I give it full marks. It is odd, but clearly very well done.

Thank you Rashad. It is an odd piece and I like it very much. It fell into place almost all by itself. I'm still not sure whether I prefer this or the other one. It's harsher here than there.
