Mts & Cloudy Sky
Description: Rendered in Bryce7 beta
Big sur terrain (supplied with Bryce)
Slab for volumetric clouds
Lit with standard Bryce sun only
DOF increased render time horribly, a factor of about 20. Don't know if it was worth it, but I just wanted to take the edge off the distant peaks without resorting to postwork.

The ground material took three hours to make. Overall scene build time about five hours. That's pretty slow going for a scene with two objects in it you may think?

What Howie Farkes is for vegetation in Carrara, David is for clouds in Bryce. In Bryce, not even the sky is the limit. A photograph couldn't do it better.

I'm almost crying because I could never get such a photorealistic picture in Bryce! Bravo! The clouds are just real...

For every scene that works, there are twenty that don't - possibly more... If I uploaded all those, you would be less impressed. The secret, I find, is thumbnails. I work on a load of scenes one day and then the next, with a fresh eye, I pull up the wip directory and look at the thumbs. Forgetting the content or the complexity, I simply judge the scene by overall lighting. Pick out the one that looks most promising and focus on that. Sometimes, no matter how may attempts I make, I can't fix a scene. So it goes in the archive and then every so often I go back, look again at the thumbs and have another go.

@Horo, thank you for that. But as you know only too well, the sky is the limit. Take away the atmosphere and I'm utterly lost.

Wow!

I couldn't love it more David! Absolutely sickening! 5+, goes without saying. The clouds are simply outstanding, the terrains expertly modeled and textured as well. Very beautiful! Very inspiring! I can think of no critique of this work, other than praises!

Very photorealistic. I've tried to do landscapes before and they just fall apart faster than I can pick up the pieces. 5/5

Thank you, thank you. Rashad, the terrain is just processed slightly (to hide the steps in the 8 bit height map), otherwise it is as supplied with Bryce, I can't take any credit for Big sur. Probably a real mounting somewhere? I don't know, I got a D in geography - spend my time looking out the window at clouds and hoping for snow so we would be sent home.

The more I look at how Bryce 7beta is handling the clouds, the more I become impatient about the final release of the software. Of course only tool without a craftsman gives no result, though David.. you know :) The time you spent on the clouds was worth it. The only thing I see not 100% right is a tiny bit of incandescence over the edge, or ambient light so to speak in those clouds. Of course, that's just me..
