The Captain's Apartment
Description: You might notice a little Oriental theme going on. The Captain spent a lot of time in Hong Kong and he was in Japan several times. lol.
Used regular AA and took Rashadcarter's advice on shadows.

This is fantastic. There are so many details, so much to see and discover in this picture. An incredible picture. You get a 5/5 from me for this.

Super wonderful! I agree, this one is all fives.

Love the complexity along the room edges, very natural looking. There are some lighting quibbles perhaps, but I still think overall the job you have done here is very effective.

Like myself, you take the time to populate the scene outside the home as visible through the windows. Very nice.

Well, I still think that a partially reflecting floor will bring more depth within. Artist's choice, of course.

There are indeed a lot of things to "look" for in this render, this is beginning to look more like a screenshot from a pixel-hunting game where the player needs to find one special single object from all there is in front of him. And this is a nice thing. I guess everybody see it different. On the other hand, the captain's apartment looks like a storage or a shop of all kinds of various things to sell, not like a living room, at least not a typical one. So it only concerns me that some of the objects do not fit with one another, for example the laptop and the rudder/wheel in the back. The bell-like lamp (check to see if it's firmly attached to the wall, I'm looking at the shadow) and the other bluish one in the back on the left are too different. Perhaps I'm too used to see the interior accessories to be of the same kind when used, though this is the common way of decorating a room. That's why my vote for the current subject will be 3/5.

The color choices are a completely different matter. Not variegated, not popping up too much anywhere. And this is very nice and plays a really important role of how the viewer will perceive the overall picture. The bluish-green on the walls the chairs and the green from the plants works good. Here I can put a deserved 5/5. So in the end it makes it 4/5 I believe, but I'm not saying all those things just to criticize or praise you, I do hope the info helps you. Good job here, and good luck with the next one!

I create these scenes the way I like them, realistic or not. It's my way, my fashion, my artistic value. That's what counts. Sure I have errors in my way, but this not a realistic or paying job, this is just a hobby to me.
Yup, I screwed up on the Anchor light. I was trying to snuggle it into the corner.A storage place??? Man, have you ever been in a real Captain's or a real Admiral's apartment? I have visited several(old friends from the Navy)in my past and a couple look very, very much the same as you see here. To a Captain, these are memories to him. Everything cannot be from the same era. Oh, whats the difference if there is a laptop and a ship's steering wheel in the same picture? that one really threw me off guard. The bell light is an important item from the Captain' past. The other lamp in the room (you might see the room divider)is just that, in another room. Do you have the exact same lights in every room? There is a bit of an "Oriental" theme going on in the Captain's apartment. The room to the left could be his "Reading" room or a Study.

richter, sometimes I wonder where you are coming from and have all the time to critique my creations.
To tell you the truth, I'm not going to be reading any more of your comments. This last comment made was way off the beaten path.

So it appears that I owe you an apology for expressing an opinion? As hard as I try to read and re-read my comment to you there isn't anything, not a word that can be taken as "offensive language". I don't understand why can't you take a small bit of criticism. I'm not trying to show-off or something at your expense. This is not the first time you openly express your unwillingness to hear what I have to say about your works, although I thought that we're already on the right path with one another, speaking the "same language". Sadly that's not the case, is it... Look man, I could've been faaaar more critical, thousand times more harsh with our 1st discussion which you deleted back then, and I could be like this right now. But there is no point. The point of criticism is not the criticism itself, but where it can lead you, how can you benefit from what people say about your works. You dislike what I write to you, perhaps you don't like me much either, for the same reason. You have the freedom to delete even this comment and the one above yours that you quite possibly hate. I also have an artist's ego which can be harmed, though over time I learned how to take advantage of the crit points. Some years ago I learned from David Brinnen's works, he also criticized my works, but I never addressed to him the way you do to me, now I learn from other artists here, like Rashad for ex., a man nicknamed here as "1971s", Horo also gave me some invaluable advices over the years and many other people that stop by to say what they think.

You say it's only a hobby for you, this 3D. Does that mean that it has to look as a "hobby" with all the (pluses and) minuses it can possess? There aren't many people that comment here at bryce5.com. And even less will try to break the limits of 2 written rows in a comment, willing to provide guidance and worthy opinions for artist's benefit. You're shutting your own doors and windows by telling me "I'm not going to be reading any more of your comments". And I'm not forcing you to do anything, am I? Actually, it's a bit of a funny and sad thing at the same time given the circumstances, but I was looking forward for being this special type of "web-friend" with you as I believe I am with the rest of the bryce community here. I guess you can act friendly only to those who give you 5ers :| Nice turn of events, Gary Roth, mr. Rebel 62. Don't bother reading my comments, they're not worth 5ers, I won't bother writing to you.

No, you do not owe me an apology for expressing you opinion. Everyone has their opinion about this or that. What ever you are on, I sure don't want any. Where did you come up with anybody saying anything about saying "offensive language"? Deleting comments, no way have I ever deleted anyone's comments on ANY of my walls. See, this is why I am quiting reading your comments. You insert words or phrases that I have not said. Man, you just have me so mixed up with your comments. Horo and rashadcarter have given me comments and advise that are very helpful, when I read your comments, it's like reading a book---crazy. I do not care if I get 1 star or 5 stars. And what's this, "Nice turn of events, Gary Roth, Mr Rebel 62"???? I found one of your works that had 3 butterflies in it, one red, one blue, and one white. I really do not believe that I have ever seen butterflies like you rendered. I mean really, solid red, solid blue, and solid white. Whatever happened to textures. Also, your sky is from a photograph. Then, somewhere in your personal comment you said something like, "And, this is my way of doing it". I gave you a 0ne star and that was stretching it Well, this is my way of doing it. By the way, I still can't figure out what you mean by saying the "Bell Light" and the" Light" in the back, left side are different. This whole deal is from an (almost) actual Captains apartment. He had a lot more things there that I didn't put in. He was extremely happy about the way I rendered his apartment. I'm just confused about the things you commented on. Now, I don't want you panic, but I do not see why you have to have the same kind of lamps in every room. This is supposed to be a two room(I know, you can't really see it) render. Notice the browns, greys, and whites in the main room carpet, then look to your left and you can see another room. This is shown by the Oriental carpet and the Oriental Lamp.

Ah Gary - there's probably a tiny bit of a misunderstanding. We all respect the artists choices. I "missionize" for this gallery/forum everywhere because of all the good meant advises. Were would I be without? Given up Bryce long ago, that's a fact. You see, I have some works published in other forums and either was ignored or ah-oh-wowsed. The second one always flatters my ego for a minute or so. But where's the help? Where are the fingers that point out where I could improve?

I'm now appraching my sixth year here, being a regular almost since the start. I remember about two guys having been mean, and they're gone.

Giving advice is a delicate matter. We can compare a work that appears to depict something real by comparing it with reality and give advice to get closer to it. Then, there are abstracts where we don't have a reference and we resort to expressing our feelings we get by beholding the artwork and think about what could either change or emphasize it.

I don't agree always with what advice (I'm not using the word "critique" here) is given. I made my choices and stand by them. This doesn't make those giving advice wise guys. They try hard from their perspective and I don't only think that's ok, I'm grateful nevertheless - though I don't heed them for that particular work, but may well for a future one.

I've known richter for quite a while and was not always in agreement (but most of the time). I'm absolutely sure, not everybody agrees with my ideas anytime. If you don't understand some point, you may always ask to get a more presise comment. I've had many emails by regulars asking for clarification what I meant. This is a good way and we all here help as good as we can. We're all individuals with our own ideas. What we share is our love to Bryce.

Horo,

To tell you the truth, in his first comment, I took a few things as insults, like the whole first paragraph.
These I take as insults;
1.a screenshot from a pixel-hunting game
2.the captain's apartment looks like a storage or a shop of all kinds of various things to sell, not like a living room

And the rest, he just plain lost me. What's the difference if I have Bell like lamp in one room and an Oriental blue lamp in another room?
Everyone should take a real good look at my nickname here. I've been a rebel most of my life and I'm staying with that nick. I do not like conformity.
