Mountain
Description: An attempt at a realistic landscape. Before anyone says anything, I am aware of the gray spot in the lower right area. I would have fixed it but I did not want to re-render until I obtained opinions on how to improve the image in general.

Nice start. You can remove the grey spot by giving the ground plane the same material as for the terrain. I see that you used a photograph for the sky. It looks great.

The mountain has a good shape but the material applied doesn't seem appropriate to me. It is a bit "boring". The meadow in the foreground also has a material from the lab. Not a bad one, but one well known. Try to tweak it a bit to make it look different.

The meadow and the mountains do not interface very well. It should slope up the mountain. Perhaps you can move the mountains farther away and introduce some haze to get more sense of size and distance. If you move the mountains back and introduce some haze, we will get the impression of standing on a hill and see the mountains in the distance, between them is a valley.

So far so good. For the lighting, you need to solve for skylight in some way. Outdoor light influences are usually boiled down to the sun and the skylight. The skydome is evil, and so is anbient glow as you know. I would suggest placing a few blue tinted dim radials randomly about the scene to give a sense of fully 3d skylight. Naturally, you need a very bright sunlight to provide the "heat" to the scene. Often a radial as sunlight works better than the default sun, which is notoriously dim.

When it comes to lights and materials, think of it this way. If you ever need to use 100% diffusion, then your lights are too dim. You should never need to max out diffusion. You should never allow yourself to run out of options as they say.

Nature and landscapes are often very complex. As Horo states, you will need to find ways of manipulating the haze field to serve you as a scale or distance indicator.

The photo sky is just fine. I think however that it might be best to first work on the other aspects, working a real photo sky into a cg render is so very challenging all on its own. It is very difficult to align the light and shadows when photo skies are used.

This brings me to IBL. If not IBl, then as I mentioned, randomly placed radials will do the trick for indirect light.

In real life colors are usually not as extreme as we assume in our renders. Often when it comes to realistic saturation, less is more. When selecting material colors in the material lab, try to avoid using saturations levels above 180. The only way to get true realism is to be extremely specific with saturation. To do this make sure you select ctrl+alt+ mouse click to bring up the advanced color picker. Never take colors for granted. And on that note, make sure you disable gamma correction if you have not already. Gamma correction and the haze field do not work well together when realism is the goal.

Consider adding some vegetation complexity. Ground level veggies, mid level, and a few taller veggies.

Fun fun!

bullit35744:The sky is a .jpg

Horo: I am going to alter the terrain materials. I didn't originally intend to use such a bright material for the hill in the foreground. Sadly this was the only one that seemed to fit at the time. I'll either tweak it or use a different material entirely. As far as the mountains in the background go, they might take a little longer to alter, being that I have to make sure it it fits with the foreground material. The haze might take awhile to get right, but I see now that it is a nescesity.

rashadcarter1: I intend to alter the light immediately. I'm not too fond of the bryce sun myself. The difficulty with ibl (for me anyway) arises in finding the right one to accurately light the enviornment, as I have yet to find a decent resource for new HDRIs. Regarding the vegetation, I'll have to decide on that considering that I might eliminate the vegetation entirely.

I appreciate all feedback and advice. It appears as though I have alot of work to do :)
