Red Rock Homestead
Description: Rendered with Bryce5.5. Now this one gave me a few headaches. No matter what I did in the sky lab, I could not get shadows from most of the objects. Everything is set properly on the ground. I think that is due to the ground mat I used. But, I liked the ground and did not want to change it.

There is a master shadow setting in the sky lab. make sure shadow intensity is iset to no less than 75%.

I did experiment with shadow intensity in the sky lab. This was the only way I could get the shadows on the ground. I had to put up with the sharp shadow on the barn in order to get shadows on the ground. If I lowered the shadow intensity, I would not have the shadows on the ground.

Yes, you got dark shadows to the left of the barn but hardly any on the ground. I suspect the material on the ground has a bit much ambient. Otherwise, this is a nice render. The sky is a photograph, I take it. It blends in the scene nicely.

You are very correct about the shadows. I had one heck of a time getting shadows to show on the ground. It is the ground mat file that has caused the problems, but I liked the ground mat. I thought it was perfect for the scene.

I must say I'm impressed by your skills evolving more and more when you allow yourself to spend enough time on a project. A nicely populated scene this is. Full of life.

I guess you've already found the remedy for the ground and shadows. If you haven't then you should know that (if it was an ambient channel issue) zero-ing the values for Ambient in the material editor will not change your ground texture pattern or its diffusion. You know that there are controls for either of those available.

There is this one more case or situation. Say you're so much pleased with the ground (as I get it from your comments) that whatever you do, you wouldn't want to loose its appearance. Then I'll say that the whole thing is a direct subject of how you light your scene. The use of secondary radial light sources always helps, no matter interior or exterior you're working on. There are more advanced techniques on Global Illumination in Bryce realised and made possible by David, Horo and Rashad you can feel free to apply if you wish. The essence is within the random distributed lights (or "light clusters" to quote Rashad) and the Light Lab inverse gradient. [You can read the whole story here]. Take your time and read carefully. It pays off to know how to realistically lit a scene in Bryce.

The other method is to use the so called Pro Render technique (by a man named Pumeco), which involves using the True Ambience render option (available to you when you switch to Premium Effect Quality in the Render Options, although sadly I cannot seem to access his web site right now, perhaps its down. Anyway, again - take things one at a time.
