I don't know how many of you watch Stargate, but I love it, and I really l like the Replicator Bugs so I tried to make one in Maya. I first made the replicator block then duplicated it many times over. This picture was rendered in Bryce. It is standing on a large rectangle with a mirror on it. 1 light under each model and 1 large light on top. I am currently making a new one in Maya and it will hopefully have joints. I've never used joints before so I am having some troubles but it is coming along. Comments welcome. Thank you.
Ah. I remember these pests. Gave the Asgard a serious run for there money . . . Oh. That's right. They didn't use money. I guess they really were smarter than us. ;-)

I remember those too, there were so many, and really fierce attacking. Your model looks almost like the "real" one. I was going to recommend you putting some joints so it doesn't look all that plain, but then I saw the description. Now, are you talking about "physical" joints, part of the model itself, or joints that you can bind to the model (as a step towards animation)?
The only thing that's missing is some fine-noise (almost surface-blurred) metallic material appied and some IBL reflections to complete the surrounding environment. Use of DOF will really take you on the beneficial side :).

Richter, I am talking about both joints. I am going to make the 'physical' joints but I am also trying to figure out how to make joints so I can animate it someday and change leg position easily. Still trying to make a good texture, right now its just a default grey.
Again, Thank you!

Well, I'm lost with the Replicator Bugs. However, the model looks great and quite elaborate.
