Dark Tunnel with Soft Shadows (Fixed)
Description: I have the Soft Shadow settings right on this one. It darkened the the image a little but I think that adds to the ambiance of creepiness. ;-)

Thanks to Horo and Richter for helping me fix the Soft Shadows. :-)

All comments are welcome and appreciated.

It looks very good now. I still think the bulbs themselves could do with more brightness. Have you ever experimented in the Light lab with Color Gradient, then Edit. You can control falloff nicely.

If this tunnel is bone dry, everything looks good as far as I can see. However, if you want a damp thing, you may want to add some specularity and possibly rust. It's all in the Mat lab.

Nevertheless, it's a great job you've done here. Richter is right about putting the scene away for a day or two. I'm usually a bit impatient and put a work out a tad early. A few days later, I get angry with what I've missed to put right just because I was so "in love" with what I've done and overlooked a lot of small things the peers notice immediately.

Thanks, Horo!

I wasn't really thinking of doing damp. That's something I'll consider. Now that you mention rust, I wanted the pipes and other iron hardware to look rusty but I pushed the material scale too high and they look like they're painted brown.

I'll probably come back to this one later. It's been a bit frustrating with the save delay and trying to fix a few positional screwups I had along the way. I need some time away from this one t so I can ponder my next project. Now that I've proven to myself that I have the ability, and the patience, to focus on a complex task I can plan bigger and better things.

As I said at the beginning of this one, I did it completely in Bryce. I should make use of the other tools I have, Carrara and Hexagon, to pump up the complexity of future projects. There are also the various Windows and Linux freeware tools, Blender, Wings3d, etc, I can start toying with later. All these possibilities will keep me from getting bored. ;-)

By the way, I can increase the diffusion on the light bulb spheres to brighten them without effecting the light of the scene. That would be simple.

This is looking so amazing. I really like the texture on the pipes on the right side and your lighting is superb.

Thanks, Connor!

That's not a texture on the right side pipes. They are made up of a repeating set of two differently sized disks (flattened cylinders) simulating flexible condiuts. The connecting sleeves are simply longer cylinders with a slightly larger diameter. There are about 4500 disks in all three conduits. Call me crazy but I like to make things as realistic as I can. ;-)

O no, I quite agree with you. Making a detailed model is very fun. I also am not very good at texturing models especially from Maya so I like to put lots of detail on them. However, I was not expecting 4500 disks just for the three conduits. Very good job!

The soft shadows brought the image some levels higher, true. Appears to me that you decided to put to use only the shadows to contribute to your scene, not the burnt-light contrast I also mentioned. It's your call, artist's choice.

Btw I did not realize that you had so many objects placed for those flexible conduits, I thought the pipes to be nicely textured cylinders. Within the Bryce 6 preset library there are some very useful "gilled" procedural textures with simple XYZ-size adjustment (Metals -> Industrial -> Ribbed Hose 3 for ex) or David's "Threaded bar" procedural in the Mat exchange. Have that in mind for your future setup optimization, and I believe that'll save you some headaches and save-delays (render-time even). I mean, why would have them (conduits) so detailed if there's no pipe-bending at a given place for ex. and this detail go unnoticed...

I thought about the conduits later and realized I could have cut that number in half by doing it with boolean cutaways and I also realized that, considering the viewing angel, I could have gotten away with using a negative bump map.

20/20 hind sight. lol

Extremely fine work Spektyr. I have watched the progression and the final result is most impressive. It has a feeling of realism for sure. 5/5!

Excellent job! Would not want to be down there
when the lights go out! Could imagine all kinds of
scary sounds.

Only suggestion would be to add some dirt...looks very clean. But the overall impression is very creepy...very well done.
