Un Rituel de L'Absinthe
Un Rituel de L'Absinthe

Un Rituel de L'Absinthe
Description: The only thing equally enjoyable to creating this piece of mine was the subject matter / theme research. A rare and expensive alcohol is not just a drink to spend your savings on buying it from a "liquor" store or on an auction, it is the physical manifestation of a century-developed and perfected traditions through the generations with an unimaginable number of human-hours hard work involved within the alcohol creation. Some special "limited collector's edition" bottles are so old that people admire them as to paintings, as to work of art. For my project I chose to depict the rare (then again not that extremely rare) French Absinthe trade mark of Roquette dating back since 1797, and more specifically to depict one of the known rituals for preparing a favourite absinthe aperitif. The current setup takes place in a cozy small room somewhere in France in late 19th century. The only thing missing in the picture is a person, who carefully pours water on the sugar in the spoon so the sugar-water and the absinthe may mix in the proper proportion. Of course the pleasure and the art of preparing and consuming such alcohol lends itself to the reasonable consumption amount :).

Technically - my standart tools - Maya and Photoshop were used for creation, textures are personal collection of various wood-type materials, vintage photos and old archive brochures, all models,UVs by me (the spoon and the absinthe glass below it are based on original items), rendered in mentalRay, post-processed for slight shapness and depth of field in Photoshop. I hope you like it, and of course, Cheers!

Ah absinthe - the White Fairy. Not good for yourbrain if you take it too regularly. The production was a long time prohibited in this country, only for a very few years they may again produce it, but with much lower alcohol content. Nevertheless, we always could make it ourselves with ingredients from the pharmacy and by collecting on the fields. And with all the wine here, there's a lot of self made alcohol, too. We drink it pure, without the water that makes it milky white. But as I said, only if your ill for medicine.

Your render is outstanding. Excellent models and textures. Like a photograph. Certainly worth a 5/5.

Marvelous, Richter! It is beautiful picture! Hope I will be able to create such works in future! Is the texture on the table entire texture, or group of textures applied to different parts of the table (I mean rings)? 5/5 from me.

Thank you for the appreciation!

The whole process took me a week to complete (modeling+UVs+texturing+lighting) so I feel happy to see positive votes.

Alexandr, the texture on the table was one of the largest as a resolution size (4096x). I always set up a given texture large if it will be covering around 40% or 50%+ of the final render area. So this way when I'm rendering a bigger render (the original img was 1200x1500) I'm avoiding the problem with pixelated textures. To put it simple - if I see 1200 pixels of the rendered table, the actual table texture has to be twice this number in that area = 1200x2 = 2400 pixels. And now you see why the whole tex size is 4k. Same applies to every single object in scene.

For those of you who are interested, I'm putting here the [Wireframe], [Final Gather pass] and the [Table UVs]. So Alexandr, the table tex is one whole piece - its easier to paint it this way in PShop.

Double Wow! The interaction of the light witht he bottle creates very nice caustic effects on the table. I really love the detail here, as always with your work. Splendid.

I feel that this could have been rendered in Bryce, a good thing for Bryce, though the caustic efects might be hard to reproduce in this particular manner.
