Hunting - Hopefully!
Description: I've fiddled around with this image on and off for some months, changing the sky, perspective and so on, originally I had an autumn sky but anyway......

Must admit the models are Meski's and his tutorial was used for the image, probably the first what I would call "real" scene that I made other than the usual mountain stuck in the sea or a dessert etc. LOL!

Haven't posted anything here before, and whatever I do seems to take forever but thought I would now as people here seem to give "real" comments, not just "that's nice" as you tend to get on other sites. So all comments good or bad more than welcome!

Jo.

Oh it's nice! ;)

Hi Jo, welcome here at bryce5.com, I'm glad you've found us.

This is a nice scene with a lot of potential but it could be improved upon. Please bear in mind that I don't intend to belittle your work. My advice is rather to help you improve.

The scene is low in contrast. The sun shines, as we can see from the shadows but the Bryce sun is really a torch with a flat battery. It doesn't give the light this scene needs. A radial without falloff at the sun's position would give you more control over the brightness. There is a tutorial named "Additional Sunlight" on my website (Raytraycing > Tutorials > Bryce > Page 1, 3rd from top. (Sorry for my self-advertising). The same tutorial can also be found on David's website.

The water looks a bit milky in the foreground. Water is transparent, reflection comes with the viewing angle. I usually start water with 99.6% transparency and 0.4% reflection. There are examples in the Material Exchange department.

The sky looks flat, that's a general Bryce problem. Make sure you have Spherical Clouds selected in the Sky Lab, Cloud Cover and also move Cloud Hight up. You may have to adjust Frequency.

I'm not sure the material on the far mountain is good or not. We have to see it when there's more light.

What I really like here is the composition and your loving care for detail. The grass is excellent. I understand that the bird is fleeing from the cat. Perhaps you could arrange that a little bit differently to avoid that the bird is flying out of the picture.

Oh yes, the trees are very good and I like the addition of the ship on the lake. As I said, a scene with a lot of potential.

Thanks so much for your comments Horo, that's why I came here because most places won't (or don't like) to give real criticism. I'll certainly play around with this again when I've time, one thing, that's not the original sky I used, think one of the others was probably better, not even sure why I changed that now.

Frankly I've never really played around with lighting very much, so that's the next thing I need to learn a whole lot more about - lots to learn! :)

Beautiful composition, JoAJ. I think the water looks awesome, like a light breeze blows across the surface. The cat has been discovered. Funny she was almost willing to get wet to get at that bird. Very nice image.

Horo's notes are excellent. They are specific and just technical enough to equip you with the experiecne you need for the next scenario.

Very nice landscaping. You should be proud.
