Remnants of the Past
Description: Inspired by Rashad's "Under the Sea Surface" image I revived an old project of mine and re-did it from a mountain range to sort of under-ocean-scape. The final render was at 3543x1323 and took 9,5h on my machine. [Here] you can see a detail fragment of this original res. This project was also an opportunity to test some postwork techinques for the plankton and the sunrays and "real" water caustics from within Bryce. I was lucky enough to find a precious little program that generates a 2-colored caustic patterns and saves them as *.bmp. One has full range of controls over how those caustics will look like (depth, intensity, amplitude, frequency, timing, output res, subdivision factors with supersampling and motion blur sampling for highest quality, plus the output img is 100% tilable). Program's name is Caustic Generator. So I rendered a [caustic image 1024x] and used it as an image gel on a Round Parallel Light. Since I knew I'll render the img quite large (and suitable for print at 300dpi) 1024x wasn't exactly enough as a caustic resolution. So in PS I tiled the img to a 4096x resolution - this worked fine for my case. I duplicated the caustic light, removed the gel and used the clean light as a sun, shining in the same direction as the caustic pattern. In the Bryce setup there were 4 terrains with 4096 res and some older models of mine. Camera's angle of view = 130. It is worth mentioning that for this particular project the caustic light casts no shadows and thus some really dark areas were brighten a bit. To further enhance the feel of the whole environment I used Pro Render settings 16 rays/pixel. The small rocks, cracks, rust stains, plankton, sunrays, bubbles and depth of field done as a post-work in PS. Thanks for watching, guys and I hope you like it!

Quite some way down according to the darkness. This picture cannot be fully appreciated because it is represented not large enough, as I could see from the fragment of the original resolution. The plankton and murkyness look very real. The caustics look really good, as do the light rays. I'm rather envious at your mastery of post production. I wouldn't give this a 5/5 if I hadn't seen that full res fragment. This is really another outstanding piece of work of yours.

Agree with Horo, in all points, and if I could I would put 10/5, just because I don't think I could make something like this... So You have my 5!

Amazing

Really nice. Some of the rubble look like the DHD from Stargate, just broken a little. 5/5

Now that is some filthy disgusting water! Excellent in every way. The caustics are particularly well established, interacting very nicely with the material chosen for the bottom. The only critique I could offer would be on the background. Right now all emphasis is on the foreground however I feel like I should be seeing caustic effects extending a bit furhter into the distance than we do now. The bubbles are excellent. I imagine animals living here. Amazing. And thanks for the caustic generator software link. This will be super useful! 5/5

Thanks all for the comments! I appreciate your input!

Yo, Rashad, good observation. I thought I could get away with the dof and the darkness, but you're correct. There should've been another caustic light further down, barely touching the sea-bed. My intentions were to acquire the most effective result with least amount of lights.
