Thank you for your interest, the cube is actually used as the base of the image, I wanted a translucent "ground" that also had depth and slight reflection and I was unable to do this with the default ground plane. It also affects the light from below differently.

Fits the title, Bruce! Really nice effect. I too perceive it as nerves and/or something organic. That's because of the reddish colors chosen. If the scene is so simple in tech aspect, why wouldn't you play with the setup a little more, i.e. use more of those "fission" spheres and apply dof. It shouldn't take much more rend-time.

I'm beginning to notice your fondness of using this particular color palette in most of your works. Such successfully describes a distinctive and, in a way, unique style.
