Beach House BBQ

Beach House BBQ
Description: More outdoor lighting study. Scene is lit with a radial cluster of 146 lights as soft shadow sunlight. Indirect light is a new skylight hdri and various spotlight most aimed upward to bounce the light of the deck up onto the characters. These spotlights are also responsible for most of the skin shine as IBl alone does not offer enough specular for me in this situation. IBl quality was 1024. There are rouchly 15 spotlights with soft shadows. On my systrem at full resources the scene took about 2.5 days. The hair alone was more than 1 day of rendering, as I rendered the scene first with everyone bald and plop rendered the heads with the visible hair later just to keep track of which elements of the render were the slowest. David's fire or plasma from the .mat exchange sears the steak on the grill.

Feedback is very much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

The poses of the persons look absolutely convincing, as do the facial expressions. The lighting has been professionally crafted. I'm always very much impressed at how you do such scenes - the file must have a large footprint. There are just two small spots that bug me. There is a faint, blurred blue spot above the lady at left and one just left of the head of the gentleman with the green pants. I first thought it to be a soft lens flare effect, but it might be just a queer effect of haze and light. Nevertheless, the scene is flawless and well worth a fiver.

I guess your expanding Perfectville into Perfectworld. Very nicely done here.

Oh, and I hope you put enough garlic on that streak. Looks yummy! ;-)

These models look very nice and the skin texture looks very realistic. This lighting set up is a work of art but am wondering if it does pose some problems with the shadows. The girls lawn chair shadow is going left and then the girl on the right the shadow is going right and the grill is somewhere in between. Ok so I just stopped in to say hi to everyone. Your work is looking fantastic and the plants and roses are outstanding in the other scenes.

Thank you all so very much, each of you. I am very fortunate to have people who are supportive and critical at the same time, not everyone has the benefit of collaboration as we do.

There are some things about the image that bug me too. I should have been more specific about the far distance. The trees alone do not give us a clear indication of where we are. The blue you observe Horo is probably the haze beginning to kick in. I should have extended the trees further to include more haze so the transition would not seem so steep. The guy on the floor is by far the weakest, but admittedly was very challenging due to his placement, and I used the wrong texture, too uniform and perfect. The sun is very high up, 75degrees so most items cast shadows directly beneath themselves give or take a slight angling. I think the thing to note is that there are sunlight shadows and there are skylight shadows. Also the umbrella is made transparent yet solid by using the leaf transparency technique. This creates a shadow that is not fully mature. So on the floor of the deck I can see the shadow from the umbrella, the tabletop, and all of the chairs. This might make the shadows seem off but all of the lights are properly placed at a proper distance to prevent any disagreements in 3d space shadow direction. I did not use the transparency for the leaves of the trees, nor did I use any for the humans which creates some dark shadows in some places, but to me this is more real than adding ambient channel material glow.

Thanks all again for your very positive feedback. RenderMan, nice to read from you again. I am so glad to have you around and thanks for the kudos on the other images. Please do not be a stranger. I never sent you the new sky set-up I am working on because I assumed you had moved on to Vue completely. However if you are thinking of Brycing a little bit then let me know and I will send you the skies.

Thanks rashad I wished I had time for both programs I was going to try the elephant scene in Bryce and even started but gave up when it came to putting in the plants. But I will drop in now and then as I miss the positive feedback. Why I think about ambient all the time. I just did some testing with the ambient in Vue but could not see much difference.

I am sure you were accurate with the ligthing and don't know why the shadows seem to vary. Some very good poses with the characters the guy in the back looks like he is going ready for some yoga.
