Green & Blue
Description: As you all know I am always trying to create complex landscapes in Bryce. Because Bryce lacks instancing technology, it can be very difficult to place the thousands of trees necessary for most natural scenes without hitting a memory wall. Vue has Eco-systems. Carrara has somehting similar, but Bryce has no such thing. In this case I am using trees to fake an eco-system. What do we think?

Wow! It looks somehow as landskape from the game "The elder scrolls 4: Oblivion". Very complex and good-looking landscape! You have big patience to put these trees into Bryce scene!

Thanks you guys. This scene is more of an optical illusion than it is anything else. I am planning to post a Tutorial on this process in the Daz3d Bryce Talk Forums. I will call it faking Eco-Systems in Bryce. Check it out as it will provide alot more specific steps I cannot cover here.

There are only about 60 trees being used in this scene. To make 60 trees look like thousands of trees requires a simple trick or two. The trees themselves have been set so that the branch start and end angles are very low numbers, meaning that all of the branches point upward. By ensuring that the trunk of the tree is underneath the terrain surface, only the branches and stems are visible, appearing as thousands of distinct trees. To make a branch look like an entire tree requires that one place extremely small sized leaves in great numeration per branch. So I looked through the tree lab to find the leaf shapes that were the most complex, individual leaves that look like alot of leaves. the Yew tree and the Papaya are both great candidates for this due to their shape. The problem is that even these leaf shapes do no have enough complexity to sell a single branch as a tree as I have done here. To accomplish this effect I had to switch to blend transparency mode, The yew leaves have been replaced with a User leaf, made in psp and it is basically an image of a branch with dozens of leaves on it. So now what once was one leaf is now 30 leaves. Naturally this is alpha masked to make the leaves a cut-out when in blend transparency mode. The render is fast when using the installed leaf shapes, very good times, but it looks more like a bunch of shrubs and not like trees until you get enough leaves in there. Switching to blend transparency increased the render time by no less than 1000% from an hour and a half to over 2 days!!!! IBL and transparency are not great friends generally, but Blend transparency is the slowest transparency possible under IBL light. So I think avoiding transparency is essential though unavoidable if you want the look of a complex and full tree from a single branch.

I am still preparing the tuorial so in a day or two it will all be laid out for you to test at home.

Thanks for the positive feedback guys!!!!!!

You've done such before, Rashad, and I must say this looks absolutely convincing. I've experimented with this idea of yours but not long enough to get sensible results. I noticed this as well. Transparency and IBL do not go well together as far as render time is concerned. But blend transparency is worse.

I'm looking forward for your tut. Might save me a lot of time experimenting myself. I'm currently much absorbed by corresponding with Len and Army about principles of lighting, HDRI and ambience.
