The Bane Relic
The Bane Relic

The Bane Relic
Description: A long lost and forgotten relic of damnation, or, in other words, one more necromancer's artifact. That was basically the concept I was after.
Technically, as lighting this is Pro Render plus IBL used only for the reflection over the ruby. Very-very weak, let's say "intervention", by ibl in the overall light setup. As far as PRend is concerned - just the default sun slightly side tilted. Following an advice by Pumeco I typed in values between 75~85% grayscale (RGB = 36,36,36 exactly) for the Ambient Glow in the SkyLab, and that alowed me to introduce some bump (on the ground plane), which otherwise was lost due to the default centered sun position and the full-black amb. glow. Models and textures by me.
Postwork - contrast correction in PS and getting rid of a few "perfect" edges on a stone or two (bryce stones) here and there. Rendered with the current res, 36rpp both to keep the img's harsh look and quicker rend-time... overall rendertime = 5h22mins.

Excellent. Good choice to not go over 36 rpp for this render. Grainyness can often help and here it does. Using the HDRI only for the reflection without Effect (i.e. 0) prevents IBL to mess up with the other lights - and renders swifter, besides. Good choices all over and a very believable scene.

If I could give you a 10 I would but I can't so I will settle with a 5. The red ruby is wonderful but so is everything else. I don't think I have seen Bryce ground look that real before. Did you make the models? Awesome/perfect/other words.

Thanks guys!!
Connor, Alexandr, yes the models are mine. I imported some of them from previous works, the cross for example is from the "nocuous cross" entry, the ruby was actually a diamond before :), it comes from "timeless gift" img.

To answer Alex's question about the vines, I also work with Maya and I make my models there. The vegetation is something called "paint effects" which is one of Maya's unique features compared to other 3d packs. The paint effects are exctly what they sound like - you paint over a 2d or 3d surface with a "brush" various kind of plants/trees/particles that can be converted from the Maya's native MEL script (Maya Embedded Language, used to describe every paint fx stroke) to polygons for future export/re-edit/re-texture. And that is what I did. Later on all the texturing took place in-Bryce.

Thanks again for the comments all!
