Starchild
Description: Michael 3 Blank is from DAZ3D and lit by the Bryce stars. The material on Michael is a combination of CEL shading and Pro Render, fully transparent with a refraction index below 1 (i.e. 50). The 6 cube faces of the Bryce starry sky were rendered separately as 1600 x 1600 pixels each and assembled to make a spherical panorama (using HDRShop) of 6000 x 3000 pixels. This panorama was spherically mapped around a large sphere, the stars set to transparent. Through the stars shines the MoonGreyBlue HDRI (not to be confused with the famous MoonBlueGrey) with an Intensity of 10 and Effect of 100, using 1024 lights. Because of Michaels full transparency, the stars shine through him and because of the low refraction index, the lights created by the median-cut alg - with which Bryce creates the IBL light sources - show as light blotches on Michael and make him visible. The HDRI is not rendered as background. Everything was set black in the Sky Lab. My earlier attempts to create an HDRI from the Bryce starry sky failed. The method used this time works nicely.

I like it. At first it does not seem really complicated but when I read what you did I realized that I was mistaken. The person looks as if he is pointing to one of the stars, home maybe. Nice job again.

Very nice. It is nice to see you were able to implement both IBL and Pro Render True Ambience. The refraction work on the transparent Michael is very effective, it almost looks like gas bubbles or something inside of him. The IBL spots work very well. I love the bright shaprness of the stars.

Thank you! Though the mat on Mike is set for cel shading and true ambiance, I did not render this with TA, just conventional. My goal was to make stars shine on something - which they never do in nature - except perhaps a super nova.

Image is slightly too dark for me.
Interesting idea with starfield/HDRI, could it give more light?

I always find it an interesting effect the way the glass (be it normal or cel-shaded) in bryce behaves when the refractive index is dropped below 100. As if there are bubbles inside the body. I can see an intriguing story forming out of this image. Reminds me of the Little Prince somehow. How about playing with some of the stars the figure is pointing to? For ex. connect some with straight lines and give those bluish glow in PS, so it represent some of the known constallations. Just a quick suggestion.

I'm not so much into personal HDRI creation, but from what you explain here - you've done excellent job. And, again, I would really like to see that star-concept evlove in the fiture, Horo. Give it a whirl!
