Weapon Deployed 2
Description: I feel the need to get back to my modeling work. This image features a redesigned B24 Arrowhead, now with internal engines to make it more aerodynamic, and the cruise missile with some small changes. I added horizontal fins to the rear of the missile but they are hard to see in this image. I'll be posting my madels to the '3D Models section when I've completed the tweaks.

All comments are welcome and appreciated.

Overall I like it. The only thing I am going to complain about are the black squares on the ground. The horizontal fin might be a little bit tall but I like it. The missile is sweet.

Thanks Connor,

Yeah. When you stretch a terrain too far the shadows get way too polygonal. I have to try to work that out in the next one. I need to add rudder and aileron details to the jet and I'm going to redesign the cockpit window. This one is too flat. I'm also redesigning the B25 Stiletto and I'm just about finished with a sweet air to ground missile I'll use on an upcoming fighter jet. ;-)

Thanks Archclan!

Yes, it's a stealth design to defeat SAM radar. Even if it's visually detected this baby's FAST on afterburners and can outrun most SAMs. It's got all the standard countermeasures as well. ;-)

It is a great delight for me to see you diversify to modelling and landscaping. With all those beautiful abstracts of late, we tend to forget that you are a versatile Brycer. The models are good and you've seen yourself that there is still a bit room for improvement. The material on the terrain is very good, the terrain is too low in resolution, hence you get those angular shapes. Use at least 1024 for therrains seen at close proximity. The black rhombus shapes are hard shadows on the low res terrain. You won't have them if the terrain is at higher res. You might also have to add a weak "second sun" opposite the real one to brighten up the shadows a bit - a shortcut for a light dome or an HDRI. I understand that the main thing here are the models. If you present them in an appropriate environment, they will look more extraordinary. Last remark: the contrails are a very nice detail but they appear very solid. Apart from all my nagging, I like what you've done here. Keep it up.

Thanks Horo!

As always you have good advice to share. Pardon my DUH but I never knew you could change the res on a terrain. LOL It didn't take me long to find the setting though. :-)

I'm rendering a new version of this image with a few tweeks, curved cockpit window, hi-res terrains and HDRI lighting. I'll post it when complete. ;-)

This new render reminds me of the major reason I try to avoid IBL. These old systems have a hard time handling it and combined with hi-res terrains (2048) they are litterally crawling on a non AA test render. :-(

Does anyone know if theres a fix for the IBL rendering between Lightning versions 2b and 2c? It looks like the 2c is doing a lot better than 2b despite the mutlithreading in 2b.

I agree fully with the feedback presented above. I really like the air streams it just needs to be less regular and perhaps less solid. I wonder what is being fired upon? Nice to see you break away from abstracts for a spin. I was observing some of your Carrara renders from before and wondering when you might get back to that style of work.

I am very much confused by your slow machine response when using IBL for this render. First, what hdri are you using insofar as the resolution? Second what quality are you using? Third, the resolution of the terrain should not be that damaging to system resources on its own. Looks like most of the scene is rather low resolution or low in polygon counts. A high res hdri along with a high res hdri would lead to system stress perhaps. I use IBL in every scene and I have never had problems, as long as I kept the ibl quality low enough. I think it would be a mistake not to use IBl. it is well suited for the atmospheric interaction you are going for. Lacking 3d skylight, IBL is the only option. I wish Bryce had skylight like Carraras, it would be great. The Bryce skydome should have been skylight but it is in the end nothing more than a downward facing spotlight that does not cast shadows or provide light from other angles except from directly above. This is fine for height mapped terrains but bad for the geometry of the bomber and the bombs.
Maybe if you render the scene smaller with a quality setting of about 64 lights you could get very good results in good time. Careful about tranparency. You know all of this already surely.

Thanks Rashad!!

I had a couple of issues with the IBL being slow. The first, I was trying to run Bryce and Lightning on the same computer and it was grinding BIG TIME. The second id that I'm seeing an obvious difference between Lightning versions when doing an IBL render. Ver. 2c seems to be a lot faster even though it's not using all cores full time like 2b. I'm doing the render with Bryce and Lightning running on a dual p3 system with affinity set to one processor per app. I also have all systems running Lightning 2c. It's rendering at a reasonable speed now and I should have the finished image in about an hour frrom now.

I'm using the 'outside.hdr' that came with Bryce and I have the quality set at 32, intensity is 5 and HDRI effect is 10. I've reduced the number of terrains to 3 and have them set at 2048 res. There shouldn't be poligonal shadows this time.

I'll post the new one when it's done.
