Sponza v2
Description: I switched off the shadow casting option for the fire material and as a result, reduced the intensitiy of the lights to a tenth. Rendered with soft shadows and 16 rays/px in 8 hours. If I had rendered with 64 rays/px, there wouldn't be such obvious noise in the shadows of the far wall.

I think this one looks quite natural but I prefer the other one with the strange shadows.

I think this looks amazing like this Horo. Very natural and very realisitic. Artistically the accidental shadows of the last version were eye catching, and pleasurable. Don't make me decide between the two. Thaks for taking my advice on this one and for satisfying my curiousity aboiut the looks if th escene with no flame shadoes. The soft shadows add alot to the look. How many soft shadows lights are there total in the scene?

All 32 radials on soft shadows and the sun. A bit of an overkill for the basement, but once I was at it I thought, why take shortcuts?

When I first saw the thumbnail I thought it was very dark. The larger scene is much better but I do wonder about the lighting around the torches. It seems that there should be a brighter light at the core than what is shown emanating out to the surrounding area. This almost had the feel of some soft white light bulbs rather than fire. While those size of flames will not throw out much distant light they will have a stronger light closer to the flame. This scene is very close to the real but it would be hard to make a light source emulate a torch. I personally thing the shadows would be a little darker. Of course this is all my opinion as that is all I have.

I think you have a point here, RenderMan. I might try another render using some cunning gradient for the radials in the fire to make it brighter close by and emulate a stronger falloff than linear has to offer. If I just increase intensity, the hall get too bright in comparison with the sunlit wall. I don't fancy to add another 32 radials with square falloff.

Horo after I posted I was thinking about this scene and was thinking about gradient lights and was hoping someone would try it as it would take some time for me with my novice skills in lighting. You already have the rig set up so I will be curious as to what you come up with.

I tried to find some pictures on the internet of torches being used in caves or other settings but could not find anything that was helpful.
