Sponza
Description: This free model of the Sponza Palais in Dubrovnik, Croatia (http://www.dubrovnikcity.com/dubrovnik/attractions/sponza_palace.htm ) is from http://hdri.cgtechniques.com/~sibenik2/ and the eight nights are from DAZ3D. The torches are self made and feature David's fire material. The scene is lit by 32 torches and the setting sun. Soft shadows would have been nice, but I would have had to wait an eternity for the render to finish.

See pictures http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=3221 and http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=3223 for Rashad's examples.

Looks amazing. I miss the soft shadows but I know what you mean about render time. For em any more than 3 soft light sources and the scene render slows to a crawl.I like the setting sun, it is a detail but it really helps to set the mood. The troops are very well placed as well as being perfectly scaled. The light from the torches is great. I wonder though about the shadows, seems to me like the fire material may still have it's shadow casting engaged. I think that is where the liquidlike shadows are coming, they are soft I notice, which tells me they must be from the soft edged volumetrics of the flames. In real life I do not believe flames cast shadows, if anything it is the opposite. I noticed this shadow cast in my own experiments with fire material and even Clay's fire engages shadows. I am curious what this would look like with no shadows from the flames.

Very nice idea Horo this looks great. I downloaded this Sponza Palais sometime back when Rashad used it. I was trying to see what it would look like in Vue but gave up. Not because of the program but my lack of knowing how to use the lights.

The guards put the final touch on this picture they seem to be on the lookout as if they are expecting company.

I noticed the shadows from the flames and was wondering if this was natural. Very nice scene.

Rashad's right. The shadow casting for the fire material is on. Without it, the light cast on the vaulting is much more natural but also a bit boring. Those "caustics" shadows make it more interesting, I think, but less photorealistic. Admittedly, the shadow casting option was left on inadvertently. With shadow casting off, the lights have to be set to 1/10th of what they are here. Render time was around 3 hours only, thanks to the hard shadows.
