Mercedes SLR Roadster
Mercedes SLR Roadster

Mercedes SLR Roadster
Description: I don't really like to leave a work unfinished, so now that I have enough time for my personal projects I switch back and forth between some "oldies" and make a change or two to achieve sort of finished look. You remember the car paint material, the bryce scene is almost the same, though this time I went for a real car-modeling challenge. I present you the Mercedes SLR Roadster, I used older blueprints so the car isn't a 2008 edition :) There is postwork obviously that consists of multiple layering, noise, lens blur, sharpening, some slight blue-ish glow around the reflected lights on the windshield, scratches around the main render and alike. For lighting, the same hdr probe was used as before, but this time I added one weak radial on the shaded side of the car to increase a little bit the indirect light bounce.

Wow. This is amazing. How long did it take you to model it? Love the color.

Strange - I was sure I've seen this before but either my memory plays tricks on me or it has disappeared.

Yes, it does look superb. The noise gives it a look as if it were on chemical film (suggested by the sproked holes on top). This graininess looks good everywhere except on the hood where it is a bit hard to be really convincing - or a very fast film was used (3200 ASA or so). Technically, this might be the the high pass filter's doing (sharpening).

The "frame" into which this car is set actually enhances the subject matter. Great work.

Nice wax job!!! Wanna do my car......when I finally get a new one? ;-)

The pebbled finish on the wheels is a bit unusual. Most people prefer that shiney chrome look. Plus the surface would hold on the the brake dust more. I'd also like a different color, maybe a nice cobalt blue with metal flakes the size of Wheaties. That would draw significant attention. ;-)

On the serious side, nice modeling and IBL work. Very photorealistic. 5/5

The shine looks great and for being unfinished I like the setting. And yes the wheels do look a little unnatural but an over all very nice looking scene.

Thanks for the comments and the opinions! Who says this car is "unfinished" :) Renderman, if you think it is so, then I'd probably have to work on this one a little more, though I personally am pleased with the result. The wheels have perhaps too much grain, but this could be corrected with higher rays/pixel settings. In the future when I change the environment the wheels/rims will be shown in a more softer blur.
Horo, you're probably refering to the Paint Job test. If you're not.. I couldn't be of much help here. The noise and the slight sepia tint were meant exactly to recreate those classic chemical film look. To me it has a charm that digital photography will never be able to "adopt", after all - everything started with the old chemical film base.
Connor, the car model needed around 3 weeks for completion. Some of the first steps were made before the Morty scene setup. Thanks again for the feedback all!
