Morty in the Greenworld
Morty in the Greenworld

Morty in the Greenworld
Description: Well folks, this is Morty. He is trained in a number of martial arts, which will explain his outfit, well... the most part of it. Morty has taken on (what he calls it) an "almost 3d journey" in the fairy-tale toon Universe. Now he's "playing" in the Greenworld. As you will notice, Morty always finds a way to get himself in trouble or in a situation that will require almost all of his martial art spiritual concentration.

On the tech-side, this is a first time that I try to simulate cel-shading in Bryce. I think it turned out good. Overall for the simulation I can tell that the more simple the material / texture and at the same time the more complex the bump / model, the better the final render will look. This is as far as cel-shading takes place. Here in this scene I applied the specular technique everywhere, even to the pond and bubbles. All models were modelled in Maya and textured in PS and in Bryce. Only the terrains were bryce-made 2048x in res. The sky and the toon clouds were a single wide picture I drew in PS, the real bryce sky is gray. You can see its reflection in the pond (the pond itself has 50 Spec and 100 transparency, but 0 for reflectivity). For the sake of not getting more then 1 shade-band over the objects everywhere only the default bryce sun illuminates the scene. There was a little bit of ambient in the materials here and there and so to get rid of the resulted overall flatness of the image without removing the needed ambient or changing the specularity I used DOF with the max 256 rays/pixel. So finally there you have it "2d" but yet again it's 3d :) I hope you like it and thanks for watching.

What!

Wow. Richter, I am speechless. Not only is it very 2d and 3d, but it almost appears to be moving right in front of me making it 4d! It makes me sick. This has the polished look of a skilled professional. The depth of field blurring is utilized here to the maximum. Brilliant! I can see nothing to critique, every choice makes sense to me. Amazing. 50/50!

I'm not getting much internet time in at the moment but I couldn't let this image pass without comment (thank's to Horo for drawing my attention to it), I think it's wonderful! Truly inspireing, particularly for those of us who have dug deep into bryce and have maybe got a bit jaded with what it has to offer, this is a reminder that there are always suprises around the corner. Excellent work, really, richter you can't be praised enough for this, 5/5 without a doubt.

My God, guys.. I wasn't sure how much of a successful cel-shading simulation this image will look like to you. I'm really happy you find it professional looking and inspiring and much more... Don't know what to say. Thanks again for the appreciation!

It flashed up randomly and caught my eye again like the first time. I just have to say again that this image is ferociously good. Sickening in only the best sense of the word.
