Abandoned Halls
Description: This structure is known as the Sponza. Ideally the lighting should feel very natural. Light and shadow I am hoping are convincing.
In scenes with this much complexity it can be difficult to arrage spotlights along every wall. Spotlights aslo do not round corners very well. So In this case I have used radials. Testing more techniques for ambient light. In this case I have used IBL and a 3d mesh of radials arranged so that all lights are equally distant from one another in three dimensions. I have three layers of lights for each floor. I initially started with random cluster David style but I found it the randomness distracting so I created a structured 3d arrangement. My goal was to use the falloffs to blaance the light and remove almost all signs of banding with minimal lights.

A link to download this moidel and others is listed below:

FYI, The building has only one opening at the top. All light enters from above.

The image is yet unfinished because I do not know what I should add to this image to ptovide an intersting story. Who or what should be walking these halls?

I got an idea that might work. If you render several images; one with a single radial light on top to simulate single light bounce, then another image with several radial lights throughout where you think a second bounce of light might end up, and then only a material influenced ambient lighting aka no light. Take those three renders and composite them in photoshop or gimp, some blend mods as well as the eraser tool, maybe even dodge and burn until it looks right. I think that might workout, its something like what dave did with the elephant render

This scene looks wonderful. It has a natural appearance and I would think with the sun shinning down from the top there will be some darker areas pending on the location of the sun. In this case it appears the sun is coming off from the side. Great work on the lighting.

In fact, it does look quite naturally lit. We can see a nice blue from the sky on the far wall. There is not much that can be added as long as these halls are abandoned. Otherwise, pergaps two monchs walking on the upper level at right towards the far end between the first and second arch. I can see also plants with large leaves at each arch on the second floor and someone walking along the far wall on the basement. Or a couple of tourists in the centre of the basement looking up.

The lighting looks good. Nice and cool. For contrast I would suggest putting torches against the stone walls in the darker areas this would supply some pleasingly contrasting orange light - as well as the challange of making some convincing looking flame effects! In the courtyard below, maybe a fountain - that will really put your processor(s) into meltdown - but again, add an interesting challenge.
