Chase Two
Description: This is a revamp with the red planet put back using Horo's suggestion of using transparency to make the planet appear to be behind the clouds. A big thanks as I was wondering how to get this planet behind the Bryce clouds.

Changed the lighting arrangement. The turquoise tent in the background is from a green radial set at 20. Increased the light on the other radials just a little.

Bigger explosion and the side of the mesa from the pilots poor aim. No post work.

It looks just fine. The planet though is not placed in the most ideal position. From what I can tell the planet looks like a tranparent addition in postwork. We are looking at the shaded underside of a cloud, we would not see a planet in the background shine through a planet. The planet would have been better off had it been placed in between the clouds in the blue sky area. Otherwise the scene looks great.

Very good observation and suggestions. I was feeling the planet was missing something. I like the lighting and especially the way the colors on the mesas turned out in the foreground.

Yup, Rashad is right, the planet needs to be in a more dramatic position, say.. make it bigger and place it somewhere on the right so only the low 1/3rd of it remains visible in the rend. And change the transparency, either make it 80% or more transparent or leave the planet opaque. After all it doesn't hurt that much to have a planet under the cloudscape. :)
Renderman, did you used such terrains on purpose, this goes for the mountain color too. The terrains are simply classic Bryce terrains (or a variation), and that affects the overall look of your image on the negative side. My suggestion is to use mostly Mordor terrains with a subtle level of erosion applied. On 1024x res it takes longer to generate, but once you find what you're looking for - your mountains will look as good as real. You can also generate 512x and turn the terrain 1024x later.
The color of the texture is another issue. Maybe it's just me, but I find it more aestheticaly correct if one works with far less saturated colors for a scenery image, no matter how "alien" this image is/was supposed to be.
The ships are somehow lost within your scene. This is because of the high amount of bump on the rock material that overwhelms the viewer. Here you could either go for an insane-glassy-look of the mountains or you can make those aircrafts much much bigger and close to the camera. Once you do that, the motion blur in PS will look even better and more noticable then it was in the previous version. Good luck!

Well richter this is allot to think about but I certainly will take it to heart as I have seen your art work and you along with others have a good eye and feel for what makes a good scene. I will try this scene over and see what I can do. I did purchase some other ships from Daz so will switch them out as these ships are low poly.

The picture is about the chasing so it must have the focus. I have no qualms about the terrain you used, it is dramatic, but the colour is so sturated to make the main theme getting lost. Also, the high contrast sky distracts. The planet - I'm not happy with it because it is also too saturated. I thought rather about something like http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=866 or http://www.bryce5.com/details.php?image_id=895 and perhaps, as richter suggests, a bit larger, probably lower.

RenderMan, you make progress and I do not intend to hack you down. I think your scene here has a lot of potential to become something outstanding. It is only that all attention is delibrerately (though not intentionally) drawn away from the chasing ships. It ought to be the other way around. Think of the ships as the main thing and the rest as backdrop to fill in the white.

Have you ever looked at those pictures painted in the middle ages, depicting a holy person or an angel, or a king or lord or whatever person was considered important then. The person or being is painted with well saturated colours and the background more in pastel (unstaurated) colours to make the subject really stand out. Personally, I focuse on the backdrop when I behold such pictures because it tells a lot about the time when it was painted. The person depicted had most probably paid for the portrait (or the church paid the painter for depicting some holy being) but he was free in how he filled the white space around the gentleman.

Thanks Horo, always interested in you input. And I think the suggestions are right on.

I was wanting a sky for an alien planet so I really thought that regular clouds would be to earthly. Ha But I understand the main point you are making. The center of the theme is chasing. By having to much drama around the scene with bright colors or busy skies distracts from the main theme. The examples of skies were very good and thanks for taking the time to link them.

Yes I have seen some of the pictures from the middle ages you are referring to and again your point is well taken about the saturation.
