Help with Texture/ Model
Description: I was wondering if any of you awesome people had a good idea on how to texture this model because everything I put on it I think it looks kinda bad. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated or if you want the model to texture it yourself for some reason I can email it to you. Ideas to make model better are also needed. Made in Maya rendered in Bryce. Thanks

Ok... I'm sending you a quick mail about this ship. I explained everything there.

What I can tell you now is that this ship model looks very good. You're progressing quite fast. Given that you modeling app is Maya I guess you exported this model in *.obj. And as such once imported in Bryce it has to look smoothed. It appears to me that as if this object wasn't *.obj but *.3ds. Nevertheless you can always hit Ctrl+E and click on the left icon. This way your model will look smooth as it should. I see you might have done extrusions on already smoothed model in Maya, which isn't a good way of handling models. The smoothing operation has to take place once you finished your piece and you don't plan to edit/remodel it further. As I mentioned in my mail, Maya saves all the history for a given node (objects, lights, shaders, deformations, dynamics etc.). So if one accidentally hits "smooth", he can always go back and edit a certain action via the "channel box".

I exported the model as a .dfx. obj was not an option neither .3ds. but it worked fine when I put it into Bryce. Thanks again for you help.

GREAT SHIP! Something like this needs to be sectioned into shading domains so that different mats can be applied to different parts of the ship. I played with shading domains when I modelled my Bombers in Carrara and rendered them in Bryce. They are convered into individual meshes so you can apply different materials to them. I haven't played with Maya PLE yet so I don't know how to define the domains. You'll have to look it up in the docs.

It could be textured with UV maps. However, I can't give you tips, I'm not good at that.

I wouldn't fool with UV maps to do the entire hull. They're good for insignias and numbers but shading domains are a lot easier to detail a complex ship hull.

BTW, I haven't gotten the hang of UV maps either. ;-)

Maya can provide uv maps on its own, it does not require uv mapper. You can also select individual fces and paint them a different color. When the model is exported the individual materals become meshes.
