Bulgarian Greedy Bird
Description: I hope you'll like this little fellow, he comes from my country ;) Took me awhile to create this pic, for the days sadly are so busy and the only solution is to work at night... again. However, I put some serious effort to make him and the surroundings appear photorealistic with a slight sense of toon-style characteristics. Anyway, I love making renders with DoF and this is my first time using Maya's depth of field. I had a couple of options to choose from: 1st - the default dof Maya has to offer Or the 2nd option - setting up my own lens shader (yup, even lenses can have shaders assigned). I wanted to see if I can handle things the more elaborate way so I used the second option. The idea behind this was to mimic a physical photocamera along with some of its properties. There are some very different types of dof considering if one is using a 3D rendering software to achieve dof blurring in an image, takes pictures with his/her camera in real life, or, as myself here, tries to mimic a similar physical photo-effect again with 3d program. Without getting too much in details about this I'll say that my goal here was the so called "bokeh" effect (or a "circle of confusion"). In reality the bokeh is most visible when a highlight spot is blurred for being out of focus and takes the shape of the lens diaphragm (it can be 5 to 8-sided polygon). The more blurred the highlight, the more noticable the polygonal shape of this bokeh. In my render to "discover" this feature one almost has to "look" for it intentionally, although I know it's there :) and I see it. Aside from that there are few sss-shaders in use, motion blur (which I had so much trouble getting right) and... Horo's wonderful "precipice.hdr" that served for the reflections and the final gather color tint. The postwork consist of a lil' dust in the air, "stardust" behind the glowing ends of the birdy's eyebrows and an overall color correction. If someone is interested, a render without textures and a wireframe can be found on my website under 2008 gallery -> Characters.

Splendid colors. I love the fur turned feather simulation on the bird. The dof is very strong, though justified by the activity of the bird as it appears to be moving. A couple of things about this go over my head a bit. Are those Christmas balls on the tree? Anyhow, the lighting is excellent, I really like the way this image is almost entirely backlit. It is all indirect light and it is 3d. Great work as always Richter. Don't be a stranger buddy. There are only a few core commentors on this site for some odd reason, without the few of us who give feedback it can get lonely around here sometimes.

Very neat looking little creature does it have a name and how close to real is this bird to your randtion? The blue effect looks very much like a photograph. Like always this is a very nice work.

A real cute beautie, this birdie thing. I fell in love with it the moment I've seen it. Very nice render with beautiful light. Backdrop fits nicely in here. This can't go without a fiver.

Rashad is right, this doesn't just concern you, richter (I know your access to this site is rather limited at the time being), but many regular posters here: it's mostly the same few giving feedback. I do not post here to show how clever I am, rather to the contrary, more eyes see more and I've only improved because of the feedback I got from the peers.

Thank you very much gentlemen!

@ Rashad - The fur is there, because he is just a couple of weeks old, a baby bird. So I thought fur would fit nicely. And as a baby-bird he's hungry and as a result "selfishly" attacking the strange fruit. Yup, those are meant to be some unknown kind of fruits, not Christmas balls. After all the scene is on the fantasy side :)

@ RenderMan - It doesn't have a name yet and actually such bird does not exist. I say it is resident in my mind; since I'm bulgarian the birdy ought to be BG also ;)

@ Horo - Thanks for the 5! I try to do my best, I'm really glad you liked it.
