Method 5.3
Description: Good news. Bad news. Bad news first. The total ammount of render hours clocked up is nearly 18 to produce this image. Good news. The set up for the process was not significantly more complex than with the previous far more simple image. The scene is comprised of The Ministry model and the elephant from DAZ. And a few cones made in wings3D. And the filter, which provides the indirect light. I chose this set up because it features a large quantity of indirect light. Hdr's used in scene by horo, a full white sphere and mablethorpe fake probe.

I'm not sure I see this right. The reddish lit up dark parts of the elephant and the walls come from the Mablethorpe fake probe. This thing looks really good and real without the saturated coloured walls. Those tests were extreme but necessary. How's the ministry? Non-shadow casting walls? I do need the time to play around with this idea of yours. The render time to be expected puts me off a bit. But if it is worth it ...

Direct light comes from a single non fadeing radial with soft shadows (100) set high above the scene. In addition the scene is gently lit, directly, from the mablethorpe fake probe via the windows. Shadow intensity is 100 percent. No other light is in the scene. Everything except the filter casts a full shadow.

Ambient (alpha) filter component was provided by 256 linear radial lights placed at random around the elephant. This provides all luminance information for most of the elephant and the back walls.

Reflection (coloured) filter component is from a non shadow casting render of the scene with soft reflection light scatter.

The red you detected is probably a result of the traffic cones which are overpoweringly red in the reflection. Here they are rather more toned down since no direct light actually reaches them in the final render. This was a bit of an overkill experiment in terms of complexity, but I needed to be sure the process was still viable in such a circumstance.

These results are exactly what I would have predicted. The scene feels very 3d and tangible. I agree that the red is odd and I even fully expected that it would be. The issue comes in with the reflection.

I did not mention it in the first version because you got lucky with that one as the elephant was close to the walls, the room was relatively small in relation to the elephant. The bleeding colors worked fine for the assumed distances between the walls and the elephant. The reflection component picks up all colors regardless of distance. In real life, indirect light and color has a fall-off. The farther away an object is from a colored wall the less intense the light and the lower the color saturation of that light bouncing off of the wall. This is the major shortcoming of reflection compoenent as it has no respect for distance. In the case above the cones are likely overpowering. I think you might have gotten away with just the radials. You could always add a touch of tint to the radials.

I think the overall effect is excellent and I think the elephant looks very good indeed. I like this camera angle you are using as it makes the elephant seem properly large. bravo. Excellent work!

Thanks! Yes good point about the fall off. I will try attenuating the reflection, maybe using 50 instead of 100. Horo also mentioned that it was maybe a bit overpowering on the previous example.
